Introducing Batuka: The Next Dance Fitness Craze

Zumba certainly took 2011 by storm. And what's not to love? The Latin-dance-inspired cardio class helps tone and sculpt the body while celebrating your backside region — thank you Zumba! If your workout routine could handle more rhythmic high-energy dance moves, or you just want to spice things up for 2012, you may want to check out Batuka. This new dance workout is considered by some to be one of the things to watch for the year ahead, as teacher training courses launched in North America this past Fall and European expansion is on the horizon as well.

Founded by Grammy winner and Colombian native Kike Santander, Batuka is a fun, high intensity dance workout that offers choreographed routines to globally inspired music.

The name "Batuka" comes from the Brazilian Batucada, which is a festive gathering of people who dance and enjoy a loud, fast pace percussive ensemble. The Batuka philosophy is to utilize music to promote movement and energy, helping you discover an inner harmony between your mind, your body, and your feelings. The class not only emphasizes total body fitness with aerobic dance and some martial arts moves, but good nutrition, and a positive outlook as well. With regular practice, the end result is said to be weight loss, improved coordination, and increased contentment.

I have been doing Batuka (the original from Spain) for over a year. In fact I loved it more than Zumba because it incorporates actual fitness moves like lunges and squats in their dances. I am not sure how the new Batuka will be (since they split it up into about 4 different types) but I am definitely willing do try it out. Very excited it came here to the states!
