Need to Beat the Heat? Stock Up on Coconut Water

In many parts of the country the heat wave is showing no signs of slowing down. While you can schedule your workouts earlier or later in the day and always have a water bottle nearby, extreme heat can put a damper on any enthusiasm for outdoor workouts. You need to take it a lot slower and pay attention to your body in the heat, since overheating can lead to heat exhaustion and dehydration.

One way to help prevent dehydration, whether you're braving triple digits for errands or trying to find a shady path to run, is to stock up on coconut water.

  • Why drink it? It's hot out, no? Coconut water contains many essential electrolytes, including a whopping amount of potassium, which rehydrate you quickly — perfect for a postworkout at any time, but especially important when the heat rises.
  • A healthy treat. Not only is it healthy for you, but coconut water can be as cool and refreshing as a Summer beverage, but with far less sugar. In fact, a glass of coconut water in general only has 14 grams of sugar, so it can hit some of your sugary cravings without overloading on sugar.
  • Mix it up. Add coconut water to smoothies, use flavored coconut water to make popsicles (Vita Coco's acai and pomegranate flavor is a FitSugar favorite), or add to soda water and frozen juice concentrate to make your Summer breakfast even more cool and refreshing.

I have to admit, I was not a fan of coconut water the first few times I tried it, but it's slowly growing on me. I find the unflavored versions taste best when they're kept cold, so stock up your cooler (or grab your insulated water bottle) and enjoy the Summer heat!
