Blueberries: In Season and So Good For You

What is not to love about the blueberry? Low in calories and high in antioxidants, blueberries definitely fall into the super food category.

Blueberries are high in antioxidant phytonutrients called anthocyanidins. You may not be able to pronounce that word, but let me tell you what it does. This antioxidant is an anti-bacterial pigment, which has a beneficial effect on blood vessels and the treatment of varicose veins. Blueberries also contain tannins, which act as astringents in the digestive system to reduce inflammation. Blueberries also promote urinary tract health, since they contain the same compounds found in cranberries.

Personally, I like blueberries just about any way you can serve them: fresh and unadulterated straight out of the basket, on cereal, in muffins, distilled into a compote and ladled over ice cream whole wheat pancakes. This delicious berry is in season right now, so get them while they are tasty and affordable.

Tell me, do you love blueberries? If so what is your favorite way to enjoy them - tell me in the comments section below.

@c0rkie: I never thought that blueberries were expensive. What would be a reasonable price for them? I have them in my homemade fruit smoothies almost every nite. The only time I don't have them is when the store carries blueberries from outside the U.S.

When I make waffles, I pour the waffle batter onto the waffle iron, then I sprinkle blueberries on top of the batter before closing the waffle iron. Blueberry waffles! Yum.

I love blueberries! My hubby, the picky eater that he is, doesn't usually eat fruit with breakfast but he'll stir some blueberries into his oatmeal.

I like blueberries, but dont love them. I force myself to eat as much of them as possible due to their benefits. About the only way I eat them is raw. (I do love blueberry pie, but that defeats the nutritional benefits haha)

I never really liked blueberries (except in muffins and cookies) until a few weeks ago. We had no other fruit in the house, so for breakfast I had to punt and mixed some in with my Cheerios and milk. And I really liked them! I've been having them all the time now.

I second the frozen blueberries and the smoothies. They are great. Also, blueberry mojitos! Maybe not so healthy, but hey, they are delicious.
