Healthy To-Do: Call Your Doc For Test Results

If you listen to the news at all, then you know our healthcare system is a mess. Doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants — they're all overworked. If you recently had a medical test, be it a cholesterol screening or pap smear, you should follow up with your doc and to find out the test results. We like to think that no news is good news, but that is not always the case. A recent study found one out of 14 times medical offices failed to notify patients of abnormal test results and lab work. Do yourself a healthy favor and ring your doctor's office if you haven't heard about your latest test results.

I work in a lab that does testing for various physicians and other clients and like darc said, PLEASE don't call the lab for your results until after you find out how long it will take your results to arrive. Otherwise, you'll just end up being very annoying to the techs doing your workup. Some microbiology cultures can take up to a full week or more to result out, so check with your doctor beforehand.

Great advice. I work at a company that performs GI testing and I get calls from patients quite frequently when their ordering PHYSICIANS should be the ones explaining the test results to them. It's important that patients keep reminding their docs.

This is a great idea, but only if it's necessary. When you get the tests, make sure you ask how long it should take, and wait that long before calling.

My GP is hopeless at calling back with test results. I had some tests done last year that I thought were quite important (I had irregular bleeding and I was tested for cervical cancer) and my doc failed to call back for two weeks, I called the surgery and the nurses had no clue what my results were so I had to make a booking just so the doc could look at the screen and tell me it was all hormonal.I wasn't impressed.
