Calories in AMC's New Smart Movie Snacks

AMC Healthy Snacks Bundle Saves Calories at the Movies

If you're in the mood for a comfortable night out, nothing beats going to see a movie. But chances are if you're eating healthfully, there's nothing at the theater's concession stand that will pass the test.

AMC Theatres, however, is looking to change that. The movie chain has just debuted its new Smart Movie Snacks bundle. The snack pack, which will cost a surprisingly affordable $7, will contain fruit chips, trail mix, popped corn chips, and a bottle of water (which can be substituted for Diet Coke or Coke Zero).

Sounds healthy, but want to know how this new snack pack compares with your normal go-to movie snacks? Find out after the break!

Snack Calories Fat (g)
Large buttered popcorn, 20 cups 1500 116
Medium soft drink, 32 oz 640 0
Nachos with cheese, large, 4 oz 1101 59
Soft pretzel, large 483 4.5
M&Ms (5.3 oz) 735 31.5
AMC Smart Movie Snack pack 453 11

More calorie breakdowns for your favorite movie concession buys can be found here. At less than half the amount of calories than a large buttered popcorn (not even counting the empty calories from a nondiet soda) and a lot less fat (including saturated fat: 57 g vs. 2 g), the bundle is a great way to indulge in a snack craving while watching the latest thriller.

But while I'm glad that AMC is offering a healthy alternative to its crazily high-calorie options, I'm not sure if these healthy options will catch on. For one, you couldn't share it as easily as a drink-and-popcorn deal, meaning the price would add up if you bought more than one. Also, I'm not a big movie snacker, but when I do crave something, many times it's a more unhealthy option like candy or a small popcorn (making sure to share and to not eat the whole thing!), and I'm sure many are the same. What about you? Would you buy healthy snacks at the movies?

I sneak in water and some gummi candies. Oh and a sandwich sometimes. Nothing obnoxious smelling, usually a half a sub with no oil, mayo, or vinegar. I hate a wet sandwich.

Me too GummiBears. I always take my own water and some nuts. What do you sneak in?

That is nice, but I will continue to sneak in my food.

Lower calorie junk food is right. I'm not impressed with this snack pack. Once they sell whole foods, then I might care.

It would be great if they just served the proper portions instead of a tub of popcorn that is a day's worth of calories!

Regal Cinema in Union Square (NYC) has added a healthy snack option to their concession stand as well - but it wasn't advertised along with the popcorn and other items so finding its price (and calorie count, thank you, NY!) was difficult.

I'm not sure it will catch on but I am glad they are offering it! I'm not really into candy or popcorn so it is nice that there are different snack options and the fact they are somewhat healthier is a bonus!
