Calories in a BLT

Are BLTs Really That Bad For You?

In case you didn't know, April is BLT month. It's the second most popular sandwich in the US (ham is the first), but of course I couldn't just tell you to celebrate with a BLT every day this month without discussing the nutritional value of this traditional lunchtime fave. If you're a huge fan of BLTs, take this quiz to see if they're as unhealthy as they sound.

That is A LOT of bacon for one sandwhich, no? I just had a bacon and egg sandwhich this morning and two pieces was more than enough.

I also like subbing avocado for mayo. It's heart healthy! (right?)

The bread I eat is only 35 calories per slice, so that cuts the total for the bread in half because I'd be only using 70 for the bread, I like to use a lot of lettuce, and one slice of tomato, although it's good to add a bit of mayo.

Plan tonight was to make blt's with turkey bacon. we baked the bacon, cut up a tomato that's where it ended I ate four pieces of turkey bacon with tomato on top. And it was damn good!

No BLT's for this non-meat eater! Unless you count the once a year Faux-BLT, using a vegan bacon alternative. However I actually never cared much for bacon or its flavor.I would much rather have a Tomato, Lettuce and Hummus or Mustard sandwich... now that I crave. Also, what bothers me is how this article/quiz is focusing on calories. Yes, calories count however so does the fat, type of fat, carbs, sodium and to go farther, the ingredients used in the bread and if a meat-eater (which I cannot find the appeal in) what is in the bacon and where it came from. Just because an meat product says "100%" of such-such animal, does not mean it is simply one area of said animal. And you cannot forget the antibiotics and hormones pumped through them. Anything goes is the motto for most meat suppliers.

I love BLTs, but I usually have more T than anything else--I just use a tad of bacon and one piece of bread.

Ya know what? I'm cool with that. Favorite sandwich ever. I like to "grill" my bread in the leftover bacon grease.

how does a BLT have cheese on it, I've never had one with it and that would taste weird. I also wouldn't have mayo but I would use Avocado's instead. BLTA's are yummy

This post reminds me of the one recently about an engagement after a PB&J... the main picture was a PB&J, it just made everyone hungry! :p I want a facon (fake bacon) sandwich now. No tomatoes or slices bread though.... bummer. Adding those to the grocery list. I'm not a huge sandwich fan though, too dry typically.

I've never tried a BLT, I don't eat mayonnaise, I last ate bacon several years ago (I'm a ham girl) and I don't really like sandwiches. All that considered, I was most shocked by the number of calories in two leaves of romanie lettuce (each leaf really has 5 cals?!), and the fact that anybody would eat 5 rashers of bacon in one serving

Wow well the only thing this quiz succeeded in doing is making me want a BLT. Haven't had one of those in years.

PB&J is the BEST sandwich in the world :)

It also depends on what "slices" means. A thick slice of bread has many more calories than a thin slice and same w/ cheese.....Either way, not exactly a healthy 'wich!

I don't eat mayo, I prefer Vegenaise (no bacon either), but every jar I've ever seen says 90-100 calories per tablespoon. Not sure where they got the small number. This is another one of those articles that equates calories to health. How about sodium, fiber, vitamins, minerals, fat?
