Clean Fridge Before Grocery Shopping

Back on Track: Clean Fridge Before Grocery Shopping

One of the best ways to prepare for the upcoming week is to plan your meals, then head to the grocery store with a list of all the ingredients you will need.

I have added a very important step to the process: cleaning out the fridge first. This is helpful in so many ways. The first and most obvious is that it's nice to have a clean fridge and get rid of food that's no longer edible. Secondly, taking inventory of your perishables helps prevent you from buying duplicates at the store. Lastly, seeing what you have in stock in your own fridge can inspire you to make something new. Tell me, how often do you clear your fridge of food past its prime?

We live hand to mouth so the fridge HAS to be empty before we will even consider grocery shopping.

I fully clean my fridge (disinfect everything, clean drawers, etc) about every 3 months, but I empty old food weekly, usually Mon or Tues, before I do my meal planning. That way I can do exactly what the article suggests: replace anything expired, take stock of what I have and keep my fridge healthy. Also before I do my meal planning I ask my hubby if he's craving anything, that way we can get variety into our planned meals. Oh, and once I get my store's sales I'll give him a choice of 2-3 on sale fruits and veggies we haven't tried/don't eat often to mix it up. I hate meal planning, but we don't waste nearly as much food & it saves so much money!

I really need to make a point of cleaning the fridge out more often. Right now I do it about three times a year. However, its not as bad as it sounds, because it generally empties itself out every two weeks (before the shopping trip) and I can wipe everything down.

We clean out the fridge weekly the night before the garbage gets picked up. That way the fridge is clean and any old or expired food gets thrown out and put in the outside can to be picked up.

I'm super anal about what I keep in my fridge...I haven't had to throw out anything moldy in a really, REALLY long time. I rotate my produce and condiments and keep a running tab of what's in my fridge and how long I've had it in there. I keep all our leftovers in stackable containers and I write the date on them and when they need to be eaten by. I kind of use the same logic I use at work...use the oldest stuff up first so nothing expires. BTW, I only buy as much produce as I know we'll eat in a week, so by the time I get to the grocery store, the fridge is generally fairly empty of produce, so it's nice and cleaned out.

I try to make sure that we eat most everything before it goes bad, so there's usually not too much to throw out.

We plan our meals and buy all our groceries on Sunday. When we're putting the food away is usually when we'll get rid of what's expired or old leftovers, but because we only buy what we need, we usually use everything up during the week so we rarely have to throw food out. I hate tossing food in the garbage, it feels like throwing money away.

i plan my meals for the week, but i only buy my food every few days as i need it. that way, instead of lugging heavy groceries home and realizing i already had something, i'm replacing the stuff i go through once it's gone, and i don't spend unnecessary money or let things go bad in the fridge

I always do this. I used to do it when I got home, as I was putting stuff away, but I would find that I'd forgotten something or that I now had three jars of mayo.
