Diet Tip: Don't Cook and Chew

Diet Tip: Don't Cook and Chew

If you're anything like me, you like to cook and chew. This means that as you're cooking you're also eating. The thing is that a bite here and a bite there (plus that glass of wine) can quickly add up until you’ve consumed a meal’s worth of calories before you've even sat down for dinner. Oops, guilty as charged, especially when I am baking dessert or boiling pasta. So instead of cooking and chewing on your dinner-in-progress, keep your mouth occupied with something else. Chewing gum always does the trick for me but if I'm absolutely starving, I cut up some bite sized veggies to eat as I prepare my main meal and treat them as my appetizer.

Do you cook and chew? If so, what do you do to avoid it?

I have a husband for that ;-) It's safer for our guests, I suppose, since I bake a lot of chocolate cakes and goodies while being allergic to the stuff ! And being a somewhat health nut, I'm aware that every little bite matters, so I avoid tasting as much as possible.

I never eat while cooking...for whatever reason I usually get really wrapped up in what I'm making and I don't feel like nibbling at it. If I'm hungry and I'm cooking, I'll chew gum or drink water.

When I'm cooking, I only taste-test I don't really graze or take big bites. The problem lies in baking for me, so when I bake I usually chew gum in order to avoid eating a bunch of dough.

sometimes my bf and i eat as we go because we usually eat standing up in the kitchen anyway--mostly because we're so hungry that neither of us wants to wait for a proper sit-down dinner. my mother thinks it's terrible.we do try to keep to a schedule so that we're not ravenous beasts, but it's hard to calculate. if we miscalculate, then all bets are off.

i used to cook and chew all the time and it wasn't a good thing. now i make sure that i'm cooking stuff for my boyfriend that i won't eat and he makes the stuff that i do eat. i'm a vegetarian and he's not so if i make stuff for him, it's not very likely that i'll be chewing.now that glass of wine - don't know how to combat that!

I have such a problem with this! I don't really follow recipes, so my cooking style is a little of this and a little of that. It starts out that I have to taste it to make sure it's okay, but then if it's good it's so hard to stop! I usually listen to music when I cook and dance around a bit, so I like to think I'm burning off the calories from those extra bites although I doubt it!

I don't. The most I typically do is taking a bite out of one piece of pasta to make sure the pasta is done cooking.
