Diet Tip: Enjoy Your Favorite Foods

There are many reasons that DIET is known as a four letter word. One of them being most people try to give up their favorite food completely. But that is a bad idea, if you deny yourself your favorite indulgence over and over again, you are likely to binge on that food and go overboard. Instead of depriving yourself of your favorite food, figure out how to create some boundaries.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Cookies - don't buy a package of Chips Ahoy cookies, buy ONE fresh baked one from your local bakery. The quality of the fresh baked cookie is bound to be better than mass produced cookies that have been sitting on the grocery shelf for who knows how long.
  • Pizza - pick up ONE slice of pizza instead of ordering an entire pie. Sit down and really savor that slice of pizza and don't be embarrassed to soak up the grease with a napkin.
  • Candy - visit the bulk section of the grocery store and only buy a small portion of your favorite candy. Three malt balls will satisfy your craving and do a lot less damage than a bag of Whoppers.

Remember if the box of cookies, the entire pizza, or the Snickers is not in your house, you cannot eat them.

I agree with Giasbash. Three malt balls would NOT satisfy my craving, they would make it worse! I try to avoid the bakery, cookie, and candy sections of the grocery store completely and focus on the trashy magazines at check out to block out the impulse candy.

Ok no, do not eat just one because one leads to two and two leads to three and you know what happens after that: FULL ON BINGE! Out of SITE out of MIND!!!

Good tips! And I dont know if anyone else has noticed this, but I find that if I buy the kind of chocolate that comes in a bag (milky ways, kit kats, etc) my craving isnt satiated. I want more and its terrible because then ill eat the whole bag!But I discovered (quite serendipitously) that when you get high quality chocolate (like from a store) one piece usually does satisfy my craving. Im really bad and Ill get the caramel or cream filled, but I only eat the one and it's perfect. Plus this helps to not have them around the house, haha.

That is such great advice. If I don't allow myself a treat every now and then, I find it harder to stick to a healthy eating plan. My friend and I have a cheat day every weekend where we indulge ourselves a bit and refuse to feel badly about it.

So true. I won't keep junk foods in my apartment so that I can't eat them. But, I'll pick up something small, with no left-overs, if I feel like indulging.

Great tips! I am having a major chocolate craving right now and might have to stop by the bakery on my way home!

if i dont give into cravings every once in awhile, it will consume my thoughts all day. when i get pizza i ask for only veggies and get very light cheese and extra sauce on thin crust. it drives my family nuts but i dont care, im saving almost 100 calories a slice, and i feel a lot less guilty.

I agree. I think those are great tips, but I admire someone who can eat as few as three malt balls. That is definitely not me!

Great tips, Fit! I'm a binger, so controlling portions is a major struggle for me.
