Do You Avoid Processed Foods?

Salt is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of processed foods because so many of them contain high levels of sodium. This is one of the many reasons that I try to limit the amount of processed foods in my diet. And including more natural food just takes a little planning ahead — it doesn't get much simpler than throwing a banana or apple in your bag for an afternoon snack. What's your attitude toward processed foods?

As a college student, I get crippled with convenience, but as soon as I work part-time in the health club, I'll try to go to Wild Oats (a grocery store totally wild with organic enticements that many a health nut could be wistful to buy). I wish the Wal-Mart Supercenter, where I do most of the grocery shopping, would have more organic and minimally processed items! The lack of them makes me hate that shopping experience even more!!!

I definitely don't avoid Tillamook ice cream. Other than that, when I buy processed foods, I buy ones with real ingredients. No weird stuff like HFCS or low-fat related additives. I'm like Dana18, I don't really know how to cook using cans or cheats. Occasionally, I buy spaghetti sauce and noodles, but reluctantly because it never tastes as good as the roasted vegetable sauce I make at home when tomatoes are in season. This year I am going to have to freeze enough to last me all year!

convenience sometimes gets the best of me, but even so my choices tend to be near the healthy end like odwalla, clif, kind, and other bars. whole foods really do make me feel better and happier!!!

Read Michael Pollan's book. You'll avoid processed foods like the plague, too. And honestly, it's not hard once you start thinking about it. I only shop at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods anyway, so it's even easier.

I do avoid it, but occasionally its inevitable. I definitely avoid refined sugar & "white" foods and HFCS, though. And I never eat junk, but I do eat "processed" foods I guess you could say... although I guess even healthy things like fruits and veggies are frozen/canned. I just watch out for ingredients & sodium. I think most foods taste better without salt anyway.

I have a busy life with a husband and kids. Sometimes you have to do the processed food thing. But we try to balance boxed stuff with natural stuff.

I avoid them for the most part, but there are some things that I really like that are processed. Really, I think the only processed foods I buy are my fat free French Vanilla coffee creamer and sometimes boxed breakfast cereal. Other than that, I try to eat mostly non-processed foods.

I'd say I avoid them 75% to 85% of the time but there are things I just do not have the patience or time to do. Example - bake my own whole wheat bread and English muffins, occasionally I buy Muir Glen Pasta Suace rather than make my own, and rather than make my own low-fat ice cream, yougurt, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, basically condiments I buy them pre-made alas processed. However I look for processed foods that have the fewest and simplest ingredient list on them.

The only packaged foods I buy are usually Kashi or an organic brand. Other than that it's pretty much all fruits, veggies and meals made from scratch for me! Whenever I do eat something processed, it makes me feel really sick so it's not usually worth it.

The only things I can think of that I keep around are marinara sauce, granola bars, salad dressing and salsa. I do make my own of all of those but sometimes I only have 15 mins to make dinner so the jar of sauce really comes in handy.

some foods like cheese are actually processed, but i avoid kraft american cheese-like singles and definitely go for real cheese instead. i prefer raw vegetables to veggie chips, and seriously avoid convenience food like chips and all of that, except when i want tortilla chips, and even then it's once in a blue moon.

I do mostly. I try to at least get things that aren't too bad, but if I can make something from scratch so I could leave out unnecessary and/or processed extra ingredients that I don't need, then I like to do so.

I really try to avoid processed stuff but man, sometimes you just have a hankering for a giant box of shells and cheese or lucky charms.

I try my best to eat "real" food. And if I do eat processed stuff I try to make the best choice I can, reading labels and all. The convenience though will always keeping me going back for more.
