Do You Check Out the Readouts on Other People's Machines?

Do You Check Out the Readouts on Other People's Machines?

I was on the treadmill the other day, and I had this feeling that somebody was looking at me. So I turned to my left and realized the person wasn't checking me out at all — she was looking at the readout on my machine. She felt really embarrassed, like a person who got caught stealing or something, but I just smiled knowing I do the same thing.

So I was wondering, do you glance over at the readout of the person next to you? Are you curious to know how fast he or she is going? Does looking at their readout inspire you to stay on the machine longer or move faster?

Ha Im guilty of this! But hey it's only natural..... we humans are naturally curious and sociable. We generally always want to know what our neighbours are up to. Well i know i do :p

I do it too! Mostly I check people's times, because there can be really long lines at my gym, and I want to know if people are close to being done so I can switch (or are being obnoxious and overstaying the limit!)

Guilty, Guilty, Guilty! I can't help it. I don't compare myself, it just motivates me to work harder, and go faster.

I've never done it, but I see people looking at my readout sometimes. I usually only focus on my workout and I really could care less about what other people are doing.

ok i think i'm in the minority, i do it, but only so that i can run at the same speed as the person next to me to keep me going - if they can do it i can do it, plus i like to feel unified in my running, i guess cause i picked up running in a PE class in college.

I do it too! Especially if someone is on their cell phone while working out because I have to wonder how good of a work out you're getting while catching up with your girlfriends. ;)

LOL! This woman at the gym yesterday was TOTALLY looking at my read out and I couldn't stop smiling. She was uber competitive!

I do this all the time and I always try to just glance with my eyes and not turn my head so the people don't know I'm looking. But I'm so jealous when a girl the same height is running faster, so it helps push me. I do feel guilty and don't want to be caught, but if it helps encourage me, then oh well, so be it.

I do it but mostly because I'm curious. I don't try and compete with the others around me.

The other day some guy kept looking over at my machine, about twice per minute. It got so annoying that I had to put my sweater over the readout. I don't mind a little peak but this was overboard.

Hilarious how many people do this. It's like, I never scrutinize other people's bodies at the gym, but I want to see if they are running faster and burning more calories.

I loooove to do this! I am so guilty. I want to be the fastest, longest time, longest distance, most calories around! Here's the worst part- I cover mine up so I don't stare at it (makes the time go in slow motion) but also so others can't compare to me and in case they are faster! Yes, I'm crazy but competition makes it more fun.

I don't...I am trying to hard to focus on my workout! I do catch people from time to time looking at mine though.

I'm to focused on what I'm doing to look at the persons screen next to me. However, I do look when I'm walking by.

I only check if someone next to me is working crazy and I'm curious what they're doing that I'm not. I watch people in the gym pretty often, but it's mostly to see peoples form and learn.

I'm always curious to see what pace and incline people are at because I've just started jogging/running on the treadmill. And if they're doing something that looks good, I try to incorporate it in my routine the next time I'm on the machine.

What can I say? I'm competitive. It encourages me to go faster/longer than others around me.

The only time I do is when I'm debating whether to wait a min or two for a machine or to move on to another so I check to see if anyone is near they're 30 min max otherwise I move on. Even then I feel a little rude sneaking a glance.
