Do You Eat When You're Not Hungry?

When it comes to weight loss, we talk a lot about portion control as a means of conserving calories. But sometimes you need to size up your appetite too. Before your pick up that heaping tablespoon of almond butter, ask yourself if you're really hungry.
Nibbling out of boredom is a subtle diet sabotage and can pack unconscious calories into your week. We develop habits around food too. Like always ordering popcorn at the movie theater, even though you just went out to dinner. I call it eating by association. Now, I am not suggesting you wait until your stomach is growling to have a bite to eat, but listen to your body and measure your hunger. I found myself making toast this afternoon as a means of avoiding an email I needed to write. I wasn't hungry, just procrastinating.

I also eat every 3-4 hours, so I don't really get too hungry. But I also have a problem every once in awhile where I am FULL and yet I'll start craving something. I hate that.

I'm a nervous eater too, although it goes both ways - eating for procrastinating or distraction, and avoiding food since it grosses me out when I'm upset about something. Mainly, it makes me feel horribly guilty to have those moments of weird relation to food, knowing that for so many people in the world food is just what you need to survive. :/

gnat, although I fall victim to this too, what works for me is subbing a healthy(er) alternative. For example if I'm craving chocolate, I'll have a hot cocoa, sweets I'll have tea, something salty I'll snack on carrots or celery. Aaaaaand then sometimes I just snack on whatever I'm craving, because life will go on if I do!

I don't snack but sometimes I just don't have an appetite around meal time. I will still eat since if I skip a meal then I will overeat at the next meal. I used to snack but once I started eating a crunchy veggie at the start of the meal and some fruit at the end, I feel much more satisfied.

I don't agree that you should always wait to you feel hungry until you eat. I eat every 3-4 hours, which means I dont neccessarily have a growling tummy when I eat but keeping food in my system helps me to not overeat. If I wait until I feel hungry, I will eat more. That being said, there is a difference between that and mindless eating or eating because it is there.

Yes...this is my new goal! I'm constantly snacking and then feel horribly full!!
