Do You Use Your Gym Membership?

Signing up for a gym membership is one way to help you get in shape. The hardest part, though, is motivating yourself to actually go. So tell me . . .

i had a gym membership that i paid for and never used. it was more expensive to cancel it than pay for it. the gym never had good classes - no pilates or yoga and all the classes were clustered from 11am - 4pm, when most people are at work. I now take a kettlebell class out on the beach, have my own bell to workout at home with and am waaaay happier about it. thankfully, that membership has run out and my mom gave me about 24 free passes to the YMCA which has classes in the evening i can attend after work.

I just quit my gym because I have tons of DVDs and I realized that as soon as the weather got colder that I was using the DVDs more. I plan on using the money that I would have spent on the gym on a cool pair of adjustable dumbbells and some new sneakers.

HECK YEA! If I calculate my monthly fee with the number of days I go... UH EVERY DAY of the month: It turns out I pay 83 CENTS a day to work out!! That's awesome!!!

I'm in college, so I guess my tuition counts towards my gym "membership"? I go nearly every day though, so I guess I'm getting my money's worth!

EvieJ, I guess you haven't been following the economy in the last 3 years or so :) 400 pounds is 660 US dollars, that's how this whole recession thing started...

i had one, but cancelled as I wasn;t going there. I actually went 2-3 times in 4 months. That's terrible. And it was 3min walk from my house. It's a good thing I got month to month contract, and wasn't stuck with the fees.

I go to the gym on campus here at my school, so I don't have to pay anything extra. I've only just started going again after months of being lazy... But I'm trying to get up to going 3 or 4 days a week!

I joined a gym when I moved, unfortunately, I did not calculate with the fact that it is just the teensiest bit too far from my house to get to when the weather is less than good (I have to have two buses - as I don't have a car). I joined it because it was one of the chains which had a gym both close to where I work and where I live, but I usually just try to do it after work now.

I have just cancelled my membership due to dirty changing rooms and equipment regularly out of order. Unfortunately there is no other Gym near by.

yes, i try to go to the gym at least 3 days a week, it's an expensive and beautiful gym, with a great selection of classes. it's not as close as my other gym, but it's much better in quality.

Ohh I've heard good things about Vineman ! If you can, I would buy a used roadbike and a bike trainer now and bike indoors at your house. Spin class is useful, but it's much MUCH more beneficial to be on YOUR real bike 1

runningesq - this is the one that I am considering - http://www.vineman.com/ironman.htmI am comfortable with my swim and run. The only factor is bike - It's the beginning of rainy season now in CA, I will go to spin class and then real road ride starting next March. There should be enough time for that. :)

For years I was at the gym 5-6 times a week, now it's more like 2-3 times a week, need to step it up again.

Not really. I like working out at home being my schedule.

I love my neighborhood gym/tennis/racquetball/swim club! It's expensive but well worth the $, and it truly is my form of entertainment AND therapy. Instead of going to the movies, out to dinner, and all the other mass pop culture stuff, I am content working out, spinning, dancing, swimming, etc., at this place. I also have a membership to a Bikram yoga studio -- this one not so enjoyable, but I understand and really do feel its positive effects on my health. And I'd like to try the rock climbing clubs some of you mentioned -- sounds interesting!

lydialee - it's good!! last long ride this week - 100 miles - and then, yup, it's TAPER TIME! (which coincides with PMS.. my poor poor husband :P). I'll PM you my training blog ... I'll put a HUGE write up there. where do you live? what HIMs are you looking at? exciting! and -- if you can swim, HIMs are easier than marathons, IMO.

Absolutely!Every morning 6 days/week - it makes me feel great too. Sometimes I take classes outside my gym as well (something fun, like zumba or capoeira class:)

runningesq - How's your training for IM? I am looking forward for your post-IM report. :) Almost to taper time now, right?I am seriously thinking of a HIM next year now.

I use my at-work gym membership all the time, but I also work out at home. I have my own elliptical machine and free weights, but I use the treadmill, stationary bike, and weight machines at my gym. Plus, I only pay $19 a month...it's definitely worth it to have access to a gym at work.
