Do You Wear a Helmet?

We all know that helmets save lives. In fact, a new report has found that helmet laws have cut the amount of bicycle related deaths in children by 50 percent — yet, I still see folks riding around with their noggins unprotected. This makes me wonder about you guys. Do you wear a helmet when riding your bike?

I'm bad about this...I only wear a helmet when I ride on the roads. When I'm on a bike trail, I don't wear one and I know I should. I guess I always just feel like there isn't enough traffic on those trails to need one.

I didn't wear a helmet until my boyfriend forced me to. He wouldn't let me cycle outside without one. Now I don't go cycling without it firmly strapped to my head!

I always wear a helmet. It is like putting on a seat belt in the car. Will you need it every time you ride or ever? But if you got into an accident you would glad you took the five seconds you needed to put it on. It is also, like putting on a seat belt, automatic for me because my parents always made sure I did.

My father's a cyclist and always made me wear a helmet on my bike when I was a kid. Besides, the helmet makes the outfit with the bike shoes, shorts, shirt and glasses!

no, and i guess i wouldn't cycle if there was a law until i could afford a helmet. so i would be increasing my carbon foot print.

I always do, I would rather look "dorky" and have brain damage. This year (after my last helmet got al melty from sitting in the sun in my car) I bought an awesome Smith helmet from steepandcheap.com that I love. I have never really loved a helmet until now.

I always wear a helmet. I get SO MAD when I see kids zipping around without helments on!! It litterally makes me shake with anger when I see kids on both bikes and motorized scooters not wearing helmets. How can their parents be so naive!!!! I have seen way to many accidents to allow anyone I love not to wear a helment.

I never wear one (never have), but I know I should! I only bike around the block and no one around here wears a helmet. I did have an accident in the third grade where I collided with a moving pickup truck and I cut my ankle so bad I had to get a lot of stitches. It was because I was wearing flip flops! So in addition to a helmet, always wear proper footwear that covers your entire foot securely.

i always do when i'm riding my bike or my horse. i am always shocked when people ride their horses without helmets (and there are many at my barn that do, including teens). i haven't had a bad bike accident (knock wood) but i did have a fall on my horse a few years ago where the horse and i both slipped on a road and fell hard. i shattered 2 bones in my hand and was really banged up. i hit my head pretty hard, but was wearing a helmet. i know if i hadn't been, the hand would have been the least of my worries. it was when that happened that i realized it so wasn't worth "looking cool" without one. so when i ride, i ride protected.

If I rode for sport, sure. If i lived in a European city that was bike friendly like Copenhagen or Amsterdam, no I wouldn't.

I always wear a helmet when I bike, but I hate seeing families where the kids are wearing them and the parents aren't. Its such a poor example.

Always! I'm a triathlete... I would be toast if I didn't wear a helmet and flew off my bike while flying downhill at 35 mph. (also, I'd be DQ'd). Sublime, so glad your dad was okay! Ride smart - wear a helmet!

I just got a new bike and a new helmet. I'm still convincing my husband to buy one and wear one... especially when we go on mountain bike trails! :o

I should wear a helmet at all times, I'm such a klutz. This morning I missed the bottom step on my spiral staircase and banged up my knee. When you are a klutz like me, you don't take chances with your noggin.

I was riding bikes with my son this weekend when a family passed us on the bike path. Just after they passed, they boy in the group suddenly braked, causing his following-too-close sister to flip over the handlebars and hit her head on the pavement. The bike followed quickly behind and hit her in the back of the head. She was shaken and hurt, but she had a helmet cracked in front and back instead of a skull split in two. I would have hated to explain to my son what had happened to her if she were not wearing a helmet. Is it so inconvenient to wear a helmet?

when i ride i do wear a helmet. ever since i was a little kid - they had this town-wide program to get helmets to go riding so i've always had that habit, and when i got older and started riding more professional style bikes, i upgraded so my helmet is sleek and lightweight.

I was biking with my dad once and his hand slipped off of the back brake while he was braking. He flew over the handle bars and onto the street, cracking his helmet in half. If he hadn't been wearing it, no way he'd still be alive...ever since then I've been a staunch advocate for biking safety!
