Do holiday weekends derail your fitness plans?

Long weekends can be wonderfully relaxing, but they can often disrupt a well planned exercise routine. Since Independence Day fell on a Wednesday, you might be stretching your holiday into a glorious 5 day weekend. Even if you are working this Friday, you have to admit that this Thursday and Friday seem to have a relaxed and party like quality to them making it difficult to motivate.

So, I am curious...

This last week has been bad. I have been off all week (yay for 9 days off). I went from being able to run 4.5ish miles with no break: http://teamsugar.com/gallery/view/365908?page=0,0,2 Then only did two shorts runs of 2.5ish miles the last couple days from lack of time, 4th festivities, & super hot weather. I am going to try and run 4 miles tonight once the sun sets and bring my cell phone in case I need to call someone to pick me up if I feel like I am going to die.

I indulge in foods I don't normally have during holidays, but I jack up the intensity during my exercise time.

I usually try to do extra workouts before and/ or after if I know there is no way I can fit a workout in. However, sometimes a workout or holiday is a good reward for a tough workout. I am beginning to keep a blog of my workouts at www.workoutreview.blogspot.com

I love using my spare time to take the bikes offroad with my bf, eating breakfast in the forest by the lake. Also, I enjoy taking the horses for a nice ride. MMmmmmMMM. The holidays are perfect for outdoor activities that doesn't "look" like working out!

It's not only the meals, it's the addition of more planned activities. We tend to do a lot of family stuff or outings during the holiday weekends, so I have less me time for exercise.

miss ellie, I agree it's usually the meals that derails me. I can exercise eraly in the morning but I have steak, BBQ, pasta and such for the holiday weekend and everyone is eating I seem to just forget about food and chow down.

I usually travel on long weekends and the last thing I want to do is work out (terrible, I know!). By the time I get back home, my motivation is gone. It takes a least a couple days to get back into the habit of working out regularly again.

I just want to relax and take it easy on holiday weekends. But that's probably not a bad thing. I'm generally pretty active and it's hard for me to give myself some down time. Plus, there's always a lot of music and dancing when my friends get together, so it's not like I'm sitting on my behind all day. Food during the summer isn't that bad, because there's always a ton of awesome fresh fruit and salads. I won't mention the mess I get into during the winter holidays... ;-)

I kept up with my exercise, but my fiance's wonderful mother baked me the most delicious peach pie. I've been indulging in it a little at a time through the week because it's so great.

I tend to combine the two. I use weekend for recreational exercise. I usually get together with friends, go to the gym and try the machines I haven't tried before or that I think are fun (the rocking stretch chair is amusing!), or head out to the pool and kickboard and chat.. swim around and have fun. I ditch the routine and just relax.

if anything, i fit the gym in on the weekend, but i usually end up blowing it meal-wise because we'll go out for dinner or there are big family meals.
