Does Seeing Someone Eat Make You Want to Eat Too?

We've all been there. You're happily hanging out, doing your thing, and your co-worker, roommate, significant other, or friend starts munching away on a bag of chips, a cookie, a bowl of ice cream, or whatever. You can have two reactions — it either doesn't bother you in the slightest, or it drives you crazy and you go from perfectly content to ravenous in three seconds. So tell me . . .

honestly, seeing an overweight person eating a certain food- especially junk food, or looking at it in the supermarket, really makes me re-think whether I want that food anymore!

Definitely. If I like what they are having I always want to eat, even if I'm full and sometimes if I don't even like what they are eating.

Not unless they're eating something I've been craving.

Not particularly. Smelling something good is more of a vice for me.

YEAH! but for some reason, only if it's my boyfriend. No matter what he's eating I want to have some too. If it's something I shouldn't be eating, I'll settle for something else to eat, but I have to have something.

OK, so according to some of you, overweight people don't have the right to eat in public. Nice.

This really happens to me with pasta. I used to eat pasta like 3 times a week but now I only do it the nights before my races. (I've also lost 43 pounds) But when my boyfriend makes a big plate of spaghetti, I have a serious issue not sneaking in a small plate for myself.

The only thing that does it for me is cheesecake. I never want cheesecake, I like it but I don't crave it. Then if I'm watching "Food Network" and they make a cheesecake, all of a sudden I have to have one! It happens every time!

Generally, no. That picture reminds me of me and my husband. That's totally us. He always wants to eat what I'm eating (from MY bowl!). He says the food from my bowl tastes better (when I offer to make him a bowl of his own, which he declines). He's a brat like that. :)

I never feel like eating when I see others eat. Actually, most of the time I lose my appetite when I see people eating, especially if they're eating something really unhealthy or gross-looking. My husband sometimes eats really bizarre/weird food that makes me lose my appetite...he'll bite a hot dog and squeeze ketchup into his mouth with it, a la "Tommy Boy"...whenever he does that, I tease him: "Ugh, I can just HEAR you getting fatter". Which always makes him laugh and just about choke on the hot dogs, lol. I generally only really eat when I'm hungry and need some food.

It doesn't make me want to eat.. never has. My husband, on the other hand, is this way. He is also the most susceptible person to food advertising I've ever seen. If he sees tacos on tv, he craves them. haha.. he's lucky I think it's cute ;)

I do feel like I "should" eat if I'm over at someone's house for a birthday and they serve cake or dessert...it's hard to get over feeling awkward about saying no. But to answer the question specifically...seeing someone eat does not make me want to eat too.

Depends on what it is...and even if it makes me want to eat I don't. Wanting to and needing to eat are two different sensations for me now.

Totally depends on the food. I don't think I have ever seen anyone eat a salad where I just had to have one too! LOL Actually it's the smell of certain foods that make me want it, like popcorn or pizza. Unless I'm with a group and it's laid out, I won't eat it then, but my next snack or guilty pleasure meal, may end up being pizza or popcorn.

Only if I am really hungry and it's a food I like, and it's really more the smell of the food than seeing someone else eat. Oh, and seeing a fat (or even just chubby) person eat, espcially if it's unhealthy food (but any food), REALLY turns me off to eating. And if I actually really watch someone eat it makes me ill, because really, it's kind of gross.

Usually yes, I like social eating. But I am a picky eater, it depends on the food also.

Not really, unless it's food I realllly love!

Sounds smarmy but really it depends on the mood (mine), the food, the time of day, if I'm tired or thirsty. Lots of conditions. But if there isn't a confluence of events that predispose me to eat with someone, I won't. I think I need to have a nap....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Oh, and that looks like an opaque yellow bowl with a huge spoon; are they playfully jousting over oatmeal?
