Fact or Fiction: Exercise and Cold Weather

Last night my husband declared that he simply could not run outside because it was too cold — it was a bone chilling 45°F, but we live in California so that's cold to us (wimpy, I know). This got me thinking about it all — when is it too cold to exercise? Do you know? Take this quiz to see how much you know about the myths of exercising in the cold.

I would totally go for a jog outside if the sidewalk weren't covered in ICE! I'm quite fond of my bones, you see, so the idea of breaking them is not too appealing for me:P But this quiz was enlightening, it was good to get a confirmation about all those things I already knew, but wasn't entirely sure of.

How I wish it was that warm where I live. It's currently -23C which equates to -9F. And last week, it was -35C... -31F The weather reports were warning 'frostbite within minutes'... hello treadmill.

i stopped working out outside when the temperature went below 45 degrees. I have asthma and my lungs go crazy and plus it just sucks running outside when it is that cold!

I can feel the cold air when it hits my lungs..... it still feels pretty damn cold to me. It hurts - I hate it. And my asthma acts up when it's cold as well. Also, it takes so much longer for my muscles to warm up.

How funny. I am looking forward to the warmth the forecasted 45 degree temps will bring this week. hehe

5/5! I admit that I laughed out loud at the yellow snow question! haha! I don't mind running in the cold although... we're having VERY unseasonable temps (70's) right now so the cold isn't an issue right now!

5/5. Sweet! I run in the cold. I would go crazy if I had to do my 10+ mile runs on the treadmill. So boring. 45 degrees is great running weather. What I hate is going to visit my boyfriend in Chicago during the winters--I've wimped out when it was zero.

My lungs BURN when it's cold out.haha and I answered these questions for me. Also being in CA, I don't think you could drag me out of the house if it was 20 deg outseide. I would cry. So that's a no go for me.

"The asthma comes from the dryness, not the cold — cold air just tends to be drier." oooooh, interesting! I certainly can't exercise outside in the winter because of this though. My asthma goes all crazy!

Okay so aside of my thumbs being numb to the point of falling off because I forgot my gloves a few weeks back, my lungs were KILLING me when I did my run in 31 degree weather. I barely made a mile (I am running 1 1/2 miles at a stretch) before I had to quit because my lungs were on FIRE. It may not be as cold once it hits the lungs but I find it hard to believe that it's all that warm. :(

I wish it was 45 degrees in Buffalo! I usually put the running tights away when it gets to about 20.
