Fit Tip: Clean Equipment Before You Use It

It is not only a common courtesy to wipe down machines and equipment after using them, it is a posted rule at many gyms. I am not sure about your gym, but I am fairly certain that most of my fellow gymmates are not pulling their weight (pun intended) and cleaning up after themselves. Have you ever thought of wiping them off before you use them? I am a germ-a-phobe and with flu season raging on, I have started to wipe off equipment, focusing on handles and buttons, before I use it. It may be a little anal, but it's better than catching a nasty bug that someone else has.

I've just gone back to university for the year (I'm in New Zealand, our school years start in Feburary) and so all the lovely little first year students from all over the country bring their colds with them from home, and bring it to the gym.... and have no idea what the copious amounts of distinfectants are for. The start of the year cold that we get from the first years has a name- the Fresher Flu (even though its a cold, we know, its not the smartest!) And yes it could also be senior students, but all in all they're good about the old spray and wipe of the machines! Oh well, I'll just try my best to not get sick!

esk4 my gym has spray bottles of disinfectant and paper towels handy *everywhere* as well. When I'm ready to hop on a treadmill/bike/whatever I spray some stuff on a paper towel and give it a quick wipe before I go, and do the same when I'm done. Other than that, I just make an effort not to touch my eyes/nose/mouth too, and wash my hands when I'm done. Something else to think about: If you have an mp3 player that you use, try to wipe down your player of the case its in - think about how often you touch that while you're in the gym...

I can't count on a dry cloth to disinfect the germs from any bodily fluids (from sweat, sneezing, coughing, etc) that may have already evaporated or dried on the gym equipment. Besides, I'm not too comfortable with the idea of carrying around a ton of disposable pre-moistened cleaning cloths, but also don't want to use my own towel (that I use to whisk away my own sweat from my brow) to clean away said germs. Thus, I prefer to just make certain I don't touch my eyes, ears, nose, mouth, etc while working out, and just disinfect afterwards.

I almost always do this with cardio equipment, unless there is no way I would touch anything (like an occasional warm up on the treamill). There are so many germs in that place! TKO, you probably can't catch anything from their sweat, but they might have a cold, and rub their nose, or sneeze in their hand & if they aren't cleaning that off, you could get cold/flu germs. It's just another way to prevent catching something.
