Fit Tip: Don't Compare Yourself to Others

Fit Tip: Don't Compare Yourself to Others

One of your biggest downfalls in your weight loss endeavors could be not how you're looking at yourself, but rather how you're looking at others.

To keep yourself on track and motivated, try not to compare yourself to others. Oftentimes we look at someone who has lost a ton of weight and thought, "Why can she lose the weight so fast, but I can't?" The thing is that there is so much that you don't know -- It would be hard even to begin to compare. Maybe she's on some drastic diet. Or maybe she just has a faster metabolism. You never know, especially because there are so many factors that contribute to individual weight loss. Congratulate others but focus on yourself. Celebrate achieving small goals. Keep your eye on the ball! The last thing you need is to get discouraged in your own efforts because someone is losing weight more rapidly.

I agree it's easier said than done. It's kind of like keeping up with the Joneses...if someone else is losing weight, then you feel you need to as well. And lets face it, most women are never going to be happy with the way they look. Not a very healthy mindset, but one a lot of people fall into.

Instead of comparing myself to others, I think what I have that she doesn't. Like I love my back, it tones up really well and quickly. My sister doesn't have great back muscles, but she has other great assets. It may be vain and horrible if said out loud, but it makes me stop wishing for what the next person has.

To Feesje, you hit the nail on the head. A few months ago I went to a halloween party with some friends, and some people I had just met. Well, I met this girl there who looked absolutely beautiful. She was very tall, lean, had a great figure, blonde hair, and a gorgeous face. The whole night I was comparing myself to her because I was so jealous. Later on that night, she had told me she had serious self esteem issues; she's had skin cancer from tanning all the time, she's been taking diet pills since the age of 8, and she still finds herself ugly. By the way, the tanning and diet pills are all thanks to her mother, who STILL pushes her to tan. How awful!!

This is a very good topic because I know many of us compare our bodies to celebrities.

This is so true. Besides, nobody has the same body type. And you have to keep in mind that others also compare themself to YOU. While I may be jealous of a girl's flat stomach and long legs, she may be jealous of my butt or my nice skin. A woman may seem to have the perfect body but maybe she has a skin disease or something that nobody notices at first. Really, NOBODY is perfect. At least that's what I like to tell myself. :)

Actually, posting those dogs as the picture was a GREAT idea! I would never expect my Saint Bernard to weigh as little as a little cocker spaniel, but a lot of girls strive to be 110 or 120 pounds, when our bodies could NEVER be like that.

It is so much easier said than done. And I don't ususually try and compare myself to people who have lost weight, but people who are fit and toned... that's where i have a hard time!
