Fit Tip: Trade TV Time For Gym Time

The wave of new television shows is about to hit the air this Fall, which means we may be tempted to shorten, or even ditch our workouts for the newest episode of The Office. I'm not one to point fingers at vegging out in front of the TV, I even do it myself, but be conscious of how much time you are spending on the couch. Instead, why not sacrifice one show (30 minutes to an hour) and use it as your time to exercise. The TV will be there when you get back and if you're anything like me, you'll be able to enjoy your time to relax a lot more knowing that you've already worked out. Besides, is the new 90210 really worth it?

I have a TV in front of my elliptical machine and I watch TV while working out. It works out pretty well...I get to catch shows I would never ordinarily watch and still work out at the same time.

the easy solution here is to go to a gym that has TV's above the cardio machines that way you get caught up in the show and don't realize that you've been working out for 30 minutes already. :)

I've recently started working out with the OnDemand workout routines they have for free on Comcast cable. They have a wide variety of free downloadable workouts.

Having tv's in the gym actually helps me catch the tv shows that I'd probably be too busy to watch when at home. Just pick out the time, and do 30mins on one of the cardio machines while laughing along w/ your favorite show.

Sandykf, Agree, that is another good reason. It can definitely make the workout go faster. Especially on those days you really do not feel like working out, but know you should.

Agree with Chameleon7 and sandykf. In fact, I just started dowloading shows from Itunes so I can watch them when I'm at the gym (treadmill or bike). It is a double incentive to work out - 1) tv watching and 2) fitness. I've actually just started watching Gossip Girl Season 1 and am looking forward to working out tonight so I can catch the next episode.

I was just about to say what Chameleon7 did! There are a lot of exercises and the like you can do while watching a good show and sometimes, watching Law and Order makes exercise go by even faster. Thank you, Jack McCoy for the distraction!

Kind of a good idea, but instead of ditching 30 to hour show(s), why not just work out during one or two of the shows or just do workout earlier. This will really only work if you happen to workout at home, but should be able to work something out when workout at a gym. I have done this before and it works fine. I also have the dvr to record shows, which I do watch at times when I am working out, especially on a treadmill - it helps keep my mind off of look down at the console.
