Foods to Fuel Runners

If you're a runner, you need the proper fuel to build muscle, sustain your energy, and increase your endurance. Not all foods are created equal, and according to Fitness magazine, here are seven foods that are musts for runners.


Food Why It Benefits Runners
Peanut butter Easily digestible protein and carbs for sustained energy.
Bananas Loads of carbs for quick energy, and potassium to regulate blood pressure.
Berries Contain vitamin C and potassium to speed healing such as micro-tears in muscles.
Broccoli Full of vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and phytochemicals to make the overall body healthy and strong.

Lowfat yogurt Calcium to improve bone density, and protein to build muscle.
Lean beef High in protein and iron, which offers energy.
Wild salmon Also high in protein, but contains omega-3s which counteract inflammation and fight disease.


I eat most of these foods on a regular basis, but must admit I have a hard time getting enough wild salmon into my diet. Any suggestions for recipes would be greatly appreciated.
