The Future of Weight Loss Could Be GE's Calorie-Counting Machine

Nutritional labels on packages and handy websites like Calorie King [1] make it easy to look up foods and track how many calories you're consuming. But it gets a little more complicated when you're eating a three-course meal at your grandma's table or a crazy concoction you designed at the local salad bar.

GE wants to bring all the calories you're consuming to light. The company is working on a low-energy microwave, which wouldn't cook your meal, but rather estimate the calories on your plate [2] using sensor technology to analyze the weight, fat, and water content of the food. GE successfully designed a prototype microwave that accurately measures mixtures of oil, water, and sugar, but the engineers are still tinkering with the device so it can analyze actual food. Eventually GE plans to link the machine to an activity monitor and wireless scale to help track your calorie balance using your smartphone. Check out the video to see how it works.

Isn't technology incredible? This could be a tremendous weapon against the war on obesity — I mean world-changing! Knowing how many calories we're consuming with a touch of a button will make monitoring our daily calorie intake a cinch. On the other hand, you'll also no longer be able to blindly enjoy enormous bowls of ice cream and pasta without knowing exactly what's passing through your lips. Tell us . . .
