Go Gadget-Free on Your Next Run

Running Tip: Ditch the Gadgets Once a Week

Isn't it great that all you need for a run is a good pair of sneakers? Oh wait — I also need my iPod and headphones so I can listen to my kick-ass tunes, a heart rate monitor to track how hard I'm working, a GPS (if I'm trail running in a new place), and a cell phone (just to be safe). Geez, I guess I depend on a lot more than my trusty sneaks.

If this sounds familiar, make one run a week a gadget-free workout. I stumbled upon this tip accidentally one day when I realized I had forgotten to charge my iPod. It was really liberating to just run and focus on my breath and the sounds around me. So the next day I went without any techy gear and it was really nice not focusing on my mileage, or how hard I was working, or where I was going, and I could just enjoy the act of running. Try it and you'll see how freeing a gadget-less run can make you feel.

Do you usually run with an iPod? A heart rate monitor? Tell me what gadgets usually accompany you on your runs?

Have to have the iPod with me when I'm running long distances or running at the gym. If I don't have it then I get bored really easily and all I can think about is how much longer I have until the workout is done! Trail running is a different story though; I think that the music is more of a distraction for me when I'm putting too much focus on what is on the ground and trying not to fall on my face!

I don't run without music, I see no point to running without it. If ever forced, than I'd start humming.

I get too easily distracted without my ipod. I get lazy and slack off. I need the music to keep my momentum up.

I NEED my MP3 player when I run. I can't run in total silence; it really makes me nuts. I usually wear my HR monitor and my watch as well, but I could probably do without those.

I always use my headphones, especially for the last few months because I've been living in a European city, and the men tend to catcall...I need something zone them out!

I actually did this yesterday! I still used my iPod, but my Garmin wasn't charged, so it was the first time in over a year that I ran without a heart rate monitor and GPS. It was actually quite liberating! Once I get into my marathon training program in June, I'll go back to using it for every run, but it was nice to just run "for the fun of it" without thinking about how far I was going, what my average pace and heart rate was, etc.

I'm never without my iPod on runs. I just get so bored otherwise, and I find it helps with pacing.

I run with just my iPod. I agree onlysourcherry, I used to run without one and maybe thats why I sucked, haha. I normally don't bring my cell phone, but I brought it because there has been some shady people around lately.

Ugh, I tried a headphones-free run and I spent a lot of it walking. I could only motivate myself by singing a song in my head! Never again!

I can ditch the iPod, but I need my heart rate monitor. Without it, I feel like I'm not getting anywhere!
