Isn't it great that all you need for a run is a good pair of sneakers? Oh wait — I also need my iPod and headphones so I can listen to my kick-ass tunes, a heart rate monitor to track how hard I'm working, a GPS (if I'm trail running in a new place), and a cell phone (just to be safe). Geez, I guess I depend on a lot more than my trusty sneaks.
If this sounds familiar, make one run a week a gadget-free workout. I stumbled upon this tip accidentally one day when I realized I had forgotten to charge my iPod. It was really liberating to just run and focus on my breath and the sounds around me. So the next day I went without any techy gear and it was really nice not focusing on my mileage, or how hard I was working, or where I was going, and I could just enjoy the act of running. Try it and you'll see how freeing a gadget-less run can make you feel.
Do you usually run with an iPod? A heart rate monitor? Tell me what gadgets usually accompany you on your runs?
