It's also important to remember to focus on the muscle groups that you are going to be working when you are performing the squats. The mind plays an important role as well in mobilizing your muscles, i.e. imagining your gluteal muscles contracting as you push yourself back up.

Squats and lunges should build muscle and if they arent you may not be doing enough weight. Try squats and lunges with a weighted bar and if you already do that, add more weight. I also like to do back lunges and kick backs on a cable pulley to build muscle in the booty.
