Has the Economy Affected Your Healthy Eating Habits?

In case you missed it, the economy is in the dumps. It is affecting us all in a variety of ways, and we're being forced to cut back on spending in many parts of our lives to save money. One of those areas is food. It doesn't help that food prices have risen, especially produce and organic foods. Many healthy but costly foods are no longer part of people's grocery budgets, and they're skipping out on nutritious foods to buy junk food instead since it's cheaper. What about you?

I think eating a healthy diet is way more important than anything else in this world (well other than family) -- Without health you have nothing.

I've always been frugal, especially in my grocery shopping habits, so I haven't really changed at all.

Nope, healthy eating is a top priority. Thankfully, we do not have to compromise on that.

I don't buy a lot of processed stuff, so my food bill hasn't gone up all that much. I don't usually buy organic, but I do buy what I want to eat without regard to how much it costs. I'm not going to start eating Ramen and saltines just because fruits and veggies and good meat costs more.

I'm still buying organic dairy and cage-free eggs, but I"ve gone back to regular on some other things to save money (like I'm not buying organic pasta or canned vegetables)

Oddly, yes. I'm eating healthier now - more vegetables. I'm not sure how it happened though.

I live on an Army Base in the middle of nowhere, so eating organically is not an option. I try to eat as many whole foods (fruits, veggies, etc) and avoid artificial hormones, antibiotics, and processed foods. ESPECIALLY stuff with HFCS.

I went grocery shopping yesterday and I only picked up a couple products, fruits, veggies and meat and the bill was so high. I don't want to give that up so I made other sacrifices like the sushi to keep the bill down.

The only organic product I get on a regular basis is Horizon Milk... that is a MUST. After drinking that for quite some time, and getting a taste of regular milk aain, it tastes completely different. I could never go back.

Our eating and food shopping habits haven't changed at all. Actually, our spending habits haven't at all changed - but we did a major reign in/tightening of the belt about 4 years ago in our personal lives. So the adjustments so many people are having to make today we already did so we're still spending and buying just as we have been.

I stopped buying most of the organic foods, but when I eat meat such as chicken I make sure that it's from a healthy animalfriendly place so that's the only place I'll indulge on. Mostly though, my boyfriend and I have been eating more veggies and fruits than anything else. The corner market is cheap and has fresh food. Only prepackaged foods I get are from Trader Joes, tho I did get 2 $5 pizzas from Safeway.... ^^;;;

I don't eat out as much at all, and I have been cutting back on drinking a lot too which is great! I def have cut out organic veggies though, in times like these I just buy regular fresh veggies, but I can't justify paying that much for organic right now.

No. We've cut back in other areas so we can maintain our healthy eating habits.

I try not to eat out as much, and so that automatically leads to eating healthier, IMO.

My habits haven't changed too much. I eat a lot of chicken, vegetables, and pasta. I don't understand why people say pasta is so unhealthy. If you eat whole wheat, you're fine. Whole grains are good for you. I make mine with lean ground beef and pasta sauce. Tomato sauce is really good for you. Pasta doesn't have to be unhealthy.

My husband and I have actually found ourselves eating a lot healthier lately. I've purchased a lot less snack food and have been focusing on healthy meals. We have basically cut out eating at restaurants or ordering in. I've also cut back my Diet Coke intake from the gallons I used to drink (I have a serious problem). We have a great fruit/vegetable market near our apartment so I've been purchasing a ton of good stuff from there - and it's actually pretty cheap. Life's good!

I feel guilty for eating out now...which sucks because I'm so tired in the evenings. I have good intentions and buy healthy stuff to prepare, but I just end up going the easy, less-healthy pasta route :(

I'm trying to continue buying organic produce and dairy, but I find myself often resorting to plain store brand versions of things like soups, juices, etc. etc. I like eating healthy food, but I resort to easy meals of pasta most nights because of time and cost.

No. Health is probably the most important part of life... you should cut back other places to make sure you're eating healthy.

I've been eating better. I refuse to give up the healthy foods that I usually eat, so it's things like snack food that I've stopped buying in favor of doing things like making my own hummus and eating it with homemade pita chips.
