Are Your Thighs Burning? They Are Now

Has Your Gym Been More Crowded Since New Year's?

Has Your Gym Been More Crowded Since New Year's?

The month of January is typically like the Superbowl for gyms. New Year's resolutions tend to get more people moving off the couch and lacing up their sneakers — I have heard regular gym goers refer to the new faces in the crowds as resolutionaries. At peak times you might be experiencing a little less elbow room at the gym, and your yoga classes might be a bit more crowded too. Have you noticed a difference in the number of people at your gym or in classes since Jan. 1?

as a trainer, I can tell you the increase in members after the new year is not only annoying to you guys :) Most gyms offer "deals" in the new year, in order to get more people in the door. Normally, my days are relaxed, with one or two appointments, otherwise I am helping members get the most out of their workouts. Since Jan 1., I am constantly showing potential members around the gym and filling out contract after contract. I know I am just complaining, but let's just say I can't wait for Feb to roll around...

I just moved to a new city so I have no idea but if it's anything like my gym where I was before, it'll die down again in February

My gym has been more crowded and, as in years past, by the end of the month it will be the same old crowd.

Actually, I haven't really noticed a difference. Then again, I usually go to the gym at off-peak hours, so there's rarely a lot of people there.

meereesa - my yoga studio is the same way! I treasure my lunch time yoga class. It's an hour long compact class for experienced practitioners, there's usually only 3-5 of us, and it's very fast paced because we all know what we're doing. All the sudden we have like 20 people showing up at lunch time, have never done yoga and expect the teacher to take time to show them what to do and the class has been running over by 30 minutes (which not many of us can take that extra 30 minutes on our lunch break). This is a class specifically for people who are not beginners. I wish they would show up to the 4 pm or 5:30 pm beginner classes which are slower and are meant to teach them the poses. I'm all for people learning yoga but don't show up to the advanced class when you are a complete newbie!

Yes! I think it's great that people are getting active, but my yoga class is now jam packed wall to wall. I'll have to admit, it's very annoying hearing the newbies giggle at a few poses. Although I suppose that comment was not very zen of me...

Mine is definately more crowded and it affects my workout. I spend twice as long in the gym getting half the work out because I have to wait for everything. There is no free square inch in the whole gym. I would usually resort to running outside, but it has been about 18 degrees here, and that just a little too cold for me. Additionally, the newbie, who likely never work out, don't know how to ease into it. The first week of the year, people who I have never seen in the gym before were spending hours there exhausting themselves. It was dangerous.

Mine certainly has been busier. I love that term--"resolutionaries!" Hahah I'll definitely be using that one in the future. I'll admit that I've gotten annoyed a few times, and I've thought to myself, "where were all of you people in July when I was busting my a@@??" But hey, if it means more Americans actually get in shape, I love it. If I were to offer suggestions to newbies, I would ask that they put a lock on their locker in the changing room because lately I have to open and close five unlocked lockers to find one with nothing in it. Also, make sure you are cleaning the equipment. :-)

Yeap - definitely more people. I go to 5:45 am class on Mon and Wed, and we usually have about 10 people before the New Year. And it's now up to 16. :)

I haven't been going. ;) The malls have been crazy so I assume that the gym would be too.

the gym i go to is DEFINITELY more crowded, and while i really hope that the people who keep throwing themselves to the wall finally stick to it this year, i'm also annoyed because of the way they are so ignorantly impeding on me. i know they don't know any better, but one of them even stopped to talk to me, saying she was brand new and "you are here like, all day, every day!" yes, i work out six days a week. yes, it's hardcore, but no, it's not uncommon and i'd rather just be left alone.
