I can't believe that about Darota either! She's so pretty and young... I mean, she graduated h.s. in '97 so that means she's probably 30 years old!!! :jawdrop:

We "cowshare" with my inlaws...they buy a 1/4 cow and we take half of that. 1/8 cow is a LOT of meat, believe it or not. If you do decide to share meat, it's helpful if you have a chest freezer so you can keep it longer.

Thanks for the info Telewyo, I was trying to figure out what a good "percentage" would be for me to try and strive for. I would really never have guessed 1/8, but then again living in the city (and the last time I saw a real cow was years ago in the Central Park petting zoo...how sad) I forget how big they really are. I wonder how I would go about finding a good cowshare and a good cowpool in NYC. Total off-topic: Everytime I hear or see the word "cowpool" I think of some swanky country club resort for cows. All fancy wide-brimmed hats and utter tanning oil. LOL

I'm in Colorado and people at my work get together to buy some cows from the same rancher every year. This year I got in on it (1/8) and I'm never buying grocery store beef again! It tastes so much better (actually it's surprising how much better - I didn't think it would make that big of a difference because I always bought organic and hormone free but it's still so much better!). And you know that your cow was out in a field not in one of those scary stock yards with the sick cows who are treated badly. I got so much (lots of steaks and probably 35-1lb portions of hamburger) that I gave half to my parents and they are so impressed with it they want to get a whole half of a cow with me next year. You would probably have to get a deep freezer for more than 1/8 of a cow.

Cowpooling?!?!That is so awesome and looks like it comes out to waaaay cheaper than buying individual cuts of local grassfed beef while still being a local products from nearby farm (well, as nearby as you can get to NYC, but 1 to 2 hours away is still way better than getting chemical laden beef from out of state). For the longest I've been trying to get in on cowshares (get get my greedy hands on some good raw milk) but had no idea could could purchase a side (or whole) cow with a group! I gatta get cracking on this (Come this New Year I'm going back to eating meat/poultry/seafood after my 11 year vegetarian hiatus, so now I'm really excited!)Thanks for the info Fit!

Holy crap! I cannot believe how young Dorota is real life. Craziness! They manage to make her look a pleasant 40-ish on the show.
