How to Avoid Brain Freeze

Ice Cream Hazard: Brain Freeze

With much of the country experiencing a humid heat wave, one way to stay cool is with some frozen drinks and treats. Iced coffee, popsicles, and ice cream are sure to help you chill out, but they can also cause that intense pain in your head. Brain freeze happens when something cold touches nerves in the roof of the mouth, triggering the blood vessels in the front of your head to constrict, which produces an unforgettable numbing pain in your head.

You don't have to swear off your favorite fro yo or fruit smoothies to avoid brain freeze. The next time you experience it, press your tongue to the roof of your mouth to warm it up. This will also help: enjoy your cold treat slowly, savoring small sips and bites. You'll not only gradually let your mouth adapt to the chilliness, but you'll also avoid overindulging.
