How to Detox After Your Thanksgiving Feast

If you ate more than you wanted to at your Thanksgiving meal, you are not alone. So to help the digestion process along, here are a few ideas.

The next morning:

  • Oatmeal is really high in insoluble fiber, which helps get things moving.
  • Drink plenty of water to help the body digest and eliminate waste.

The rest of the day:

  • Eat foods high in insoluble fiber, like carrot sticks, with your turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread.
  • Get exercise: Nothing helps more than a little motion and a little sweating to help the body process and burn the extra calories you consumed.

I ran 13 miles the day after Thanksgiving to help get me feeling good again and it felt fantastic. Of course, I also managed to not overstuff myself on Thanksgiving, so I wasn't feeling too awful. Turkey and stuffing makes for excellent running fuel :)

Exercise definitely helps...yesterday my gym hosted a 2 hr. spin session w/ free bottled water, energy bars, and bananas from 8-10 am. It was a fabulous way to get Thanksgiving started. Like the papaya enzyme suggestion, had not thought about that. Papaya enzyme also helps w/ keeping inflammation at bay.

I know it's probably only funny to me, but it seems like all I've seen the last few days is "how not to eat too much at Thanksgiving", "How to keep yourself from eating more than you need at Thanksgiving", "5 tips to keep yourself from eating too much at Thanksgiving." Now all I see is "What to do now that you've eaten way too much at Thanksgiving." Oops! The ginger tea and exercise sound fantastic though! I'll definitely have to do that tomorrow.
