When it comes to running, many of us can just lace up our shoes and hit the road. The distance doesn't matter. The speed doesn't matter. It is the act of enjoying your surroundings, letting off some steam, and staying active.
However, if you have a goal in mind, running can become a little more difficult. You may be adding speed work into your training to hit a certain time goal. You may be adding distance in order to take on a new race milestone. And with that goal can come the mental barriers.
So how do you break through those barriers and achieve your goal? Here are some tips to keep you moving!
Have a mantra (or three).
Whether it is a word or a phrase, a mantra that is motivating may be just what you need to break through the negative thoughts. Keep repeating your mantra, focusing on your goal.
Focus on the positive.
Those mental barriers often include a lot of negativity. Instead, turn it around and focus on the positive! Think about how far you have come, how hard you have worked, and what you have already achieved.
Think about your form.
When your mind starts to break down, usually your form starts to waver too. Keep your chest up and shoulders back, think about where your feet are landing, and work on your breathing. This will take your focus off the mental side and onto what can help you toward your goal.
Find your power song.
If you run with music, be sure to have a power song on standby. This can be a song with powerful lyrics, a great beat, or even one that takes you back to a happy memory. It will bring a smile to your face and an extra pep in your step!
Visualize your goal.
When your mind starts to tell you no, tell it yes by visualizing achieving your goal! Imagine yourself crossing the finish line of your race. Think about telling your friends and family your new PR. Focus on the goal, and let your body do the rest!
