Mod, I am in the same boat as you. Former gymnast and pretty muscular, and my heartrate floats up around 172-181 pretty quickly. I haven't found it to be a bad thing, although on rare occasions I feel dizzy when I get off the elliptical. I just did some research and b/c you do burn more fat at lower heartrate, I'm trying to do that! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heartrate

I use the elliptical most of all. I do an hour at a time about 6 days a week. I also do weights about 3-4 days a week, for about 35 min. I feel that I get in the *best* shape, and feel SO healthy when I do brisk walking and jogging outside on trails.

I just started doing the Treadclimber and it kicks my butt! At first it felt a little awkward but you get used to it after 5 mins or so. I did it this morning for 30 mins and burned nearly 450 calories. It's so much better than doing the elliptical...try it!!!

I believe so Mod, cause me and my sister, my mom and all her sisters look like we work out, and when we actually 'do'., we gotta take it easy. It's nice though, I'm not complaining.

I do have more natural muscle than most girls. I have always chalked it up to being a gymnast when I was younger, but maybe it has to do with having more testosterone. Interesting!

Krav Maga self defense gets my heart going! The center offers special kickboxing classes, but they only punch air. To me nothing is as satisfying as getting to punch/kick an actual bag. Plus, it's great stress relief!

like what Dchic?

and the cool part is, you're naturally muscular but have to be careful about working out cause it don't take long to get cut up~

I believe you MyOp. I too have more testosterone than the average woman (got tested last week-blood test) but along with that are side-effects that I wish I didn't have.
My-Opinion My-Opinion 9 years
The reason I say that is cause when I went to visit a friend of mine at his office (he's a nutrionalist), he let me do that testing where you sit still and breathe into this thing for like 10 minutes to check your heartrate and metabolism, and when he looked at my results he started laughing and said, 'dam girl, your testosterone is off the charts for a woman, according to this, you've ran around my building'.....I think it's just hyperactivity, that's all. If you've been like that your whole life, then don't worry about it....

If you do have more testosterone, use it to your advantage. :STRONG:

I'm training for my first marathon, so I do most of my runs on a treadmill at the gym. I HATE running outside because boys/men always honk and yell at me!! :( It's also a lot safer running inside, which is important when you have to get up at 4:30 and do 9-10 miles before going to work!
My-Opinion My-Opinion 9 years
You probably just have more testosterone than the average chick Mod.

Maybe you could pass out? Breathing properly is so important too. I woder what FitSugar thinks about this. Just because you go really fast on a machine doesn't mean you're burning more calories. You can probably burn the same amount by going a little slower in pace and upping the resistance.

Thanks DesignRchic! I know that I am often above my target - I just don't know what sort of problems it presents. My body wants to be at the high end of the spectrum, I can feel it. Is it possible that some people don't fall into that range? Or do I have to half-a** my workouts?
DesignRchic DesignRchic 9 years
Mod, Your target heart rate for your age should be between 134 to 173 for a vigorous excercise. There are websites that have Target Rate Calculators that give you a range depending on your age and type of excercise you're doing.
