Joan Benoit Samuelson Quote on Running

Words That Move You . . .

In honor of National Running Day, here's a quote to remind you that every legend has a beginning.

"When I first started running, I was so embarrassed I'd walk when cars passed me. I'd pretend I was looking at the flowers."

Haha, I was the same! It's a fantastic feeling to realise you have overcome self-consciousness. For me it was running home from the gym along the streets, a lap around the park near my house, and then past all the bars where people were sitting outside on they way to my house. I was ridiculously sweaty and red-faced but I was smiling and feeling so great I didn't care! And this is from someone who used to be so embarrassed about running that I'd rather miss a bus I needed to get on than to run to it.

That is a hilarious quote. I love Joan Benoit. I saw her run that marathon in the Olympics in '84. I was a wee one but my dad pumped up her image to me ever since she passed us in the streets.
