Jobs That Get You Moving

Chances are if you're reading this post, you probably work in an office. Desk jobs are great because they're really productive and can pay the bills, but they're not so good when it comes to your body. Sitting for long periods of time can tighten your muscles and cause lower back pain. Unfortunately it can cause you to pack on extra pounds since typing doesn't burn a whole lot of calories, and many office workers tend to snack while working.

If you're looking for a career move that gets you out of your chair then give these a try. These jobs require physical strength, walking, standing, or moving around.

  • Postal worker or delivery person
  • Farmer
  • Gardener
  • Landscaper
  • Waiter or waitress
  • Carpenter
  • Fitness instructor
  • Teacher

Want to see the rest? Then

  • Janitor or housekeeper
  • Trash removal worker
  • Massage or physical therapist
  • Dog walker
  • Telephone maintenance worker

If you have a physical job that you feel helps you stay in shape, tell us about it in the comments section below.

Nursing! Most of my 12 hour shift I am running around from patient to patient.

Here is another shout out to NURSES!! I am a resident specialist (MA) and I am always running around. I am lucky to get 30 minutes to eat lunch. I go to a gym but only twice a week because I figure I am getting enough of a work out as it is! :)

Office work is bad for my body... ugh. When I was teaching, I didn't even have to exercise to stay in shape... being on your feet all day will do it.

I'm at an office job now and all I do is sit, omg I hate that.I used to work in daycare and it was so much fun running after the kids all day. I dropped 40 lbs a few years back from just 6 mos of that job. I swear if a daycare paid well enough to be able to afford California living I would soo go back to that profession in a heart beat.

i HATE that i sit at a computer all day. the only upside is that ours is a virtual office and everyone works from home, so i can go to the gym in the middle of the day if i like. downside: my kitchen is only a few steps away...

I saw this one thing on TV where they maids were TOLD how many calories they lost when they work and clean rooms and they told them that it fits in with their daily exercise...after a few months they all lost like 5 pounds WITHOUT doing anything different! SEE, it's all in your HEAD.

Another nurse! My patients are orthopedic replacement patients, so I'm literally picking them up and carrying them to the bathroom sometimes.

I housekeep at a hotel. After training my muscles were so sore! But now I'm used to it and enjoy having an active job.

oh and ps. being a postal worker is REALLY hard on your body. Most of them don't last until retirement, they injure themselves (back and knees mostly). It's a lot more strenuous then people think. But you are excersisng and get paid for it. Unless you get stuck with a driving route lol

My mom is a postal carrier. She's one of the skinniest people I know, but she's also super strong. She has GREAT upper body strength from carry a 50+ lb satchel of mail all day long. She can do one arm pullups! She's awesoem! GO MOM! Except I'm like twice as big as her. ALSO, my dad is a drummer. He teaches drums during the day and plays in bands at night, like 4-5 nights a week. He's 55 and in better shape than just about anyone I know. He has like no fat, he's healthy and takes really good care of himself. He's like a yoga master. So I have faith that with a little work I too can be as awesome and healthy as my parents!!!

Another shout for nursing. Twelve hour shifts and on the run constantly. . . and turning and assisting patients 24/7.

i always thought it would be fun to be a postal worker and walk around outside delivering mail all day. a lot better than sitting at a desk.

I'm a hostess at a restaurant/gift shop - I'm constantly moving around from seating people, checking on the buffet, cleaning, stocking the gift shop, carrying boxes...

Be careful not to eat the restaurant's food 24/7 when waitressing... then the job is not so healthy... haha

Nursing! I am a nurse in an intensive care unit, and I am on my feet for most of my 12-hour shift. Since our patients are pretty much full care, it's not only my job to monitor their physiological issues, but also to be moving them in bed, turning them, washing them, etc. Being a nurse is mental, emotional AND physical...

laurini--I'm a microbiologist as well and I never sit either! I'm always on my feet and I get maybe 30 minutes to sit every day. Another one to add: Nurses! I have a friend who's an RN and she is on her feet constantly, sometimes she even has to run when things are busy!

I'm a microbiology tech and I spend my days on my feet - literally. I have about half an hour a day where I get to sit (to eat lunch). I make a lot of the materials for the lab, so I start my mornings lifting 40lb boxes and carrying them across my lab, and I spend the rest of it lifting, carrying, loading and unloading (great for those obliques!) into high and low shelves, and generally just lots of running around! I'd been going to the gym for a few weeks before I started my job, but as soon as I started I really lost some weight and my arms toned up!

Yeah...9-1/2 hours a day desk job here!! Luckily i can get up and walk around every once in awhile...so i take the opportunity to do lunges while i walk through the back warehouse(and no one is around to see..lol). I get some other quick exercises in and try to always get up from my desk about once an hour to get the blood flowing. I am doing what i can to prevent "secretary butt" ;)

thank god I work out because everytime I am faced with a huge tray of food at work (im clearly a waitress) I know I can lift it haha. And on a busy busy night I am literally running back and forth from the kitchen to the tables.

Ahhh I know! That's the thing about my job! I hate that it's so bad for me! I try and walk around a lot and ALWAYS use the stairs but I still end up sitting for long periods of time.
