The Opening Ceremony of the Olympics Is Tonight — Will You Be Watching?

The anticipation has been building and finally the opening ceremony of the Olympics is tonight! The program is reported to be three and half hours long and quite lavish. NBC was so impressed with rehearsals that they extended their coverage of the show and the show will air 7:30 ET/PT, instead of 8:00. I am curious if you will be watching?

I'm a Winter Games girl myself, what with having been a competitive figure skater. I was on the gymnastics team for a year in HS, but it was just something to do after school, really. And I really don't support the way the Chinese government is going about these Games, so I'm not tuning in to Olympic coverage. Like it or not, the Olympics started with a political purpose, and they continue to be highly political in nature.

and i agree with DeadlyLemur. why people have to politicalize all the sports events which are supposed to bring people together and wish for peace????it's stupid!

what exactly is the controversy of China holding the Olympics? I'M ACTUALLY IN CHINA NOW.I like it here, the food, the people and many things are amazing.the whole nation is enthusiastic about the games and friendly welcome people from all over the world to join it. However i kinda understand how people think of China and all the issues here, especially those negative views, cuz many of them haven't been to China and see the things here with their own eyes.as a matter of fact, things are quite different from what you read on papers or see on TVs.Politcs and media are a forever-related partners.just don't let the madia takes control of your own judgings.

I would've watched it, but I had to work so I missed it. I really don't care that much about the Olympics, so I didn't tape it or anything. I'll probably catch a few events here and there when I have time.

I also don't like all the controversy that the Olympics and China are bringing this year, but I absolutely love the Olympics and what they stand for: they bring nations together DESPITE what's going on in our world. It's a time where differences are put aside and we just enjoy celebrating the world's best athletes. I'm keeping up with that mentality and I am really excited for the opening ceremonies tonight!

Although I do like watching some of the events (like gymnastics or swimming), I think the Olympics are just another way for corporations to make more $$ and to advertise at the expensive of host cities. Beijing isn't the first city to have problems. I just heard this morning that it took Montreal 30 years to pay off the debt incurred for the stadium they built. And let's not forgot the horrifying events in Mexico City...This year's Olympic issues have just been magnified due to the human (and animal!) rights issues and the environmental concerns.

The Olympics (and any other sporting event) bores the crap out of me. I've never bothered watching, although I've seen bits & pieces over the years when other people had them on TV. All the controversy this year has kinda made me roll my eyes, it just seems like so much struggle & negative energy for a sporting event. I get that it's a big deal to a lot of people, but it shouldn't be so difficult or complicated. And it seems like every Olympics is marred by something or other, it's not like they're always perfect golden events where everything ends well. Why don't they just pick a place where they can build a huge dedicated space for it, somewhere designed to handle what it takes to pull it off? Might be simpler than expecting cities to spend exorbitant amounts of money & human effort/lives to host something that only lasts for a couple weeks.

I watched bits and pieces of it. I work in a care home and was trying to get old people with dementia excited about the Olympics. ;p

I will be watching w/ my girlfriends with pizza and wine. Can't wait! I absolutely looove the Olympics. Our city was host to the track & field trials just a month or so ago. It was amazing and inspiring to have so many high level athletes walking around everywhere enjoying our city and competing.

i usually love watching the olympics but i just cant watch them this year. with all the controversy surrounding them being in china i just cant watch. i will follow what is going on and i feel for the poor athletes who live for this and to have it clouded by all this. it is just something i cant be a part of.

What is with the anti-China fervor here Anyhow it was a spectacular ceremony. Especially loved the athletes' marchpast. Although my country's flag was dragged on the floor by our flagbearer

I'm not watching the opening ceremonies. I don't support that the Olympics are being held in China. I will, however, watch many of the events in support of our athletes.

I generally love the opening ceremonies but I can't watch this one. Between the human rights issues and China not being prepared to host such an event (seriously the US cyclists apologized for wearing masks???) I don't want to.
