Pass Gym Time With Healthy Competition

Watching TV, listening to music, and perusing magazines are all great ways to pass the time when you're on a cardio machine, but even those can get boring. They also require a bit of attention, compromising a good workout — you can't turn pages while doing sprint intervals. When you need a little motivation, utilize your fellow gym-goers and compete with a stranger. While on the treadmill, look for someone near you who is clearly working it, and try to run a little faster or stay on the machine a little longer than that unsuspecting runner. When they end their run and you're still going, get ready for the sweet taste of victory. This works on a bike, elliptical, or in the pool. While it's helpful to use someone else's drive to push yourself, just make sure you also listen to your body and don't exceed your personal limits.

I keep up with other people in the gym but I don't stare at their displays. If I'm on the bike I try to keep up pace with the guy running on the treadmill behind me. Cause I can hear how fast they are going it's easy for me to keep pace. I think staring at someone else or their display when they workout is rude.

I agree it would be annoying in a gym. I run outside and often do it, but of course at a big enough distance that noone notices. I once had a lady even tell me she was hoping I'd be her "bunny" for running uphill, but I told her I just cycled full speed to that mountain and could in no way maintain my speed for the whole duration, so she just smiled and ran past me, but I took it as a compliment.

@teagan- i totally agree with what you said. i can't stand competiton in the gym which is ridiculous considering everyone's fitness level is different. and most of the time the "unsuspecting" party KNOWS that you're trying to compete with them, and they want to punch your lights out for staring at them and making them feel uncomfortable while they are trying to work out.

I completely agree with everyone above! For those of us trying to make ourselves healthier and develop a more positive self-image, having someone looking over at us and trying to beat us is not only annoying, but a real downer. Back when I was just starting to run, this happened to me, and it upset me enough to consider not going to the gym and running in the rain instead. Competition is fine, but the gym is a place where people go to focus on themselves. If people are really that hungry for a race, they should enroll themselves in a marathon or take it up with a friend.

I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE this so much! It's such a moronic tip. Sorry FitSuagr, but this is unhealthy and annoying gym behavior. Especially as women we compete with each other so freaking much, no one needs to be encouraging this! Also if you "stay on longer" than someone that means nothing. They could have been going for over an hour and you "stay on longer" but your total time was 10 minutes. They still beat you, sorry. So it's a really stupid idea, you don't "win" in the scenario I just gave. PLEASE stop giving this kind of advice. We as women should not be "using" "unsuspecting" women at the gym, it's wrong, and the other person knows you're doing it. Get a friend to go with you. We need to work WITH each other not compete against each other. This "tip" perpetuates the unhealthy tendency women have to compete with each other over everything.

My only competition at the gym is myself. I constantly push myself to run faster, longer, use different incline, heavier weights, etc. but I absolutely hate when people pay attention to my workouts and try to check out my treadmill stats or compete with me.I go to gym for myself and do not pay attention to anything but my personal fitness.I wish everyone else would do the same!

Chloe - they do! they take some getting used to, but they are awesome ... they grip snow and ice really well (and they aren't too $$ if I remember correctly)

I guess it doesn't really bug me when people compete with me at the gym, but I don't do it to other people because you never know if it's going to bug the crap out of them or not. I just do my own thing and mind my own business.

I don't think Fit is advocating staring at someone else's display...I think she's simply suggesting to use other gym-goers as motivation. I can't lie, I always feel awesome when I stay on a machine longer than most everyone around me. But at the same time, you can't have the "I'm so much better than everyone else here" mentality. You never know who's having an easy workout day, if they are training for something specific, etc. I run intervals on the beach, and I always feel like people are looking at me like like "Who is this crazy chick running at full speed then gasping for air while jogging at a walking pace?" Hahaha....

Runningesq - I've been planning to get some for this winter! Do they really work? The last few winters, I've been pretty lucky and we haven't had a lot of snow or ice, but it's always good to be prepared.

chloe, you can run in a blizzard -- get yak trax ;) I sometimes do this in the water, but I don't think people notice me doing it.

Ah yes, the annoying cardio machine voyeur - reason no. 235 why I avoid the gym and run outside in anything short of a hurricane or blizzard.

@2--I completely agree. I'd rather not have people looking at me or working out on the machine right next to me trying to keep up. This is a big peeve of mine, too.
