Playing Creative Games Is Good For the Brain and Relaxation

Relax Already: Become a Player

While it is true that we begin our slow mental decline as young as age 27, there is something you can do to keep your gray matter fit — playing creative games. Crossword, sudoku, and Set are great ways to stimulate your brain and create new neuron growth.

Challenging your brain is not only good for your cognitive health, but it can be a great way to de-stress at the end of a busy day. Concentrating on something other than your to-do list can really help settle a busy brain. You can play many of these creative games online, or find a good old-fashioned newspaper and have a crack at the crossword and the word jumble. It can be surprisingly relaxing to work your brain. What games do you like to play?

I do a crossword puzzle EVERY morning. I'm addicted. Yeah, I'm a granny. But my grandmother actually does them every morning and she's super sharp for her age!

I love doing crosswords and other word games as well. I've also recently discovered KenKen, which is like Sudoku but a bit tougher because you have to add/multiply/subtract/divide the numbers to make them total the answers in the corners. It's slightly addictive, but if it staves off Alzheimer's, I'm all for it!

I love Set and didn't realize you could play online too. The makers of Set have a word based game called Quiddler that I also enjoy.

I love crosswords, sudoku, and text twist. If I need a break from work I go to websudoku and do a puzzle and that helps me get back into the swing of things. I would do the others but crosswords take too long, and text twist doesn't have an ending unless you lose! The sudoku takes less than 5 minutes (usually!), so that's the perfect time-out without feeling guilty for me.

Crossword puzzles are fantastic, and I usually learn something when I get to the end and have to google a clue to finish.

stylistashley textwist is awesome!! Man we were obsessed with that in highschool . . . Ooh and slightly in topic - My high school french teacher told me that people who speak more than one language don't get alzheimers as much, and your risk goes down for every language you speak. Don't have documentation handy but it sounded right:) So one other way to keep your mind strong is to learn a language. Then you have your health as an excuse to head to Paris for culture and wine!

I love playing card games! My mom's family is really into card playing and all of them are very sharp, even as they age. My dad's side of the family doesn't play cards though and seem to have trouble remembering things as they get older. I also like playing Text Twist. Fun game!

I love puzzles! I've been doing them for years. Especially cryptograms and crosswords. I actually get books of each, because sometimes the newspaper isn't quite hard enough. I've taught many people how to solve cryptograms. They are the best!

I love Text Twist! It's one of those games where you get 6 letters and have think of all the words you can make with those 6 letters. My dad and I actually played it for over an hour once when I went home to visit. I also have an electronic sudoku game that I can take with me anywhere I go when I need to escape for a minute or two.
