Quick Tip: Don't Go More than 48 Hours Between Workouts

Quick Tip: Don't Go More than 48 Hours Between Workouts

Researchers from the University of Missouri have found that you should not be inactive for more than two days between workouts. The reason being when you're inactive for longer than 48 hours your body may experience an increase in the amount of fat and the size of fat cells in the body.

So, if you're on a workout kick, keep it up! Try not to go longer than two days in between workouts because you want to keep your momentum (mental and physical) going strong.

I read about this in Women's Health magazine and they said, "Researchers at the University of Missouri at Columbia found that when you're inactive longer than two days, the calories normally borned during exercise start being stored as fat. Fat cells in lab rats can increase in size by 25% after 48 hours of missed workouts, explains lead researcher Frank Booth, Ph.D." So at first I read "inactive" and then I read "after 48 hours of missed workouts". That is a little confusing, because I do agree with the inactivity part. I think that wou would have to be, as sunny said, sitting on the couch and doing NOTHING for that whole 48 hours. People, I think, generally get at least 30 min of some activity in just by doing daily activities. I could be wrong though.

I wish I could do *nothing* for 48 hours, even if I did get fat!! LOL... However, I go LOONNGG periods of time between workouts....so....not good even if it's not the correct interpretation!

Hey FitSugar... I followed the link and I didn't necessarily think that's what the researchers found. Where'd you get this sentence: "Researchers think this can possibly happen because the calories you would normally burn during exercise start to be stored as fat." And I got the impression they were looking at inactivity as meaning like laying on the couch all day, and activity as *anything* -- walking, moving around -- not necessarily a *workout.* So your interpretation of this could be alarming to some people who don't read the original article. (Otherwise, I love your blog!)
