If you've never been on antibiotics, consider yourself lucky or a gosh darn miracle! For some of us, it's a seasonal occurrence. Yours truly seems to find a bottle of the prescribed medicine every holiday season. This year I've had more than my fair share of the pills and learned more about them than I ever cared to know. Let's see how much you know about the medicine.

5/5--I'm a microbiologist, so I sure hope I know this stuff! Doctors aren't supposed to prescribe antibiotics for sinus infections or bronchitis, since most of the time they are viral, but sometimes bronchitis can be a side effect of another bacterial infection (like pneumonia), so if you have something that's kicking around for more than a couple of weeks, they should culture your sputum and figure out what's growing in there.

@imLissy, In certain cases, antibiotics are given to viral infections like bronchitis or sinusitis when they last longer than 2 weeks. There are studies that show its mainly a placebo effect.

how is a sinus infection different from bronchitis in terms of treating it? aren't they both usually caused by viruses?

Yay, 100%! Of all the times I've been on these things, not one doctor has warned me about how it impacts birth control effectiveness. Now that's something a girl oughtta' know! I'm glad mommy dearest filled me in years ago.
