Running the LA Marathon 2010

Get Fit For 2010: Standout Moment

We're up to week 11 of the Get Fit For 2010 giveaway, and this week's challenge is to share a standout moment from the past two months. Here's what FitSugar reader the17thman has to say about running in the LA marathon.

Back on New Years Day I decided to run the LA Marathon since I was about to turn 40. I figured I had done my first 1/2 marathon back in October so I had the time to get ready. I figured I was in decent shape so I could do it. I signed up and started running.  I didn't join a training group so I had to be in charge of not only coming up with a training program but keep myself honest and motivated.  Wow, was that a tough challenge. Mind you running for me has always been a challenge.  Completing my first 5k only about 5 years ago and my first 10k about six. After that I'd only run one 10k a year. Usually just for fun so I'd only train for about a month and a half before the event. So running a marathon was going to be a challenge.

So my standout moment of my challenge to run the LA Marathon was crossing the finish line with an okay time of 5:44:18. I was hoping for a better time but for my first marathon I'm happy to finish.

The Get Fit For 2010 giveaway is almost over so make sure you catch up on all your challenges! By participating, you'll also be entered into the drawing for our weekly giveaway of a $100 Nike gift card as well as our awesome grand prize.

on february 28, i ran my first marathon as a part of the leukemia & lymphoma society's team in training. my mom and dad had each run four marathons, but i didn't start running until after high school when i realized that if i was uncomfortable with my body, it was my responsibility to change it. a daily 2 miles grew to 3, which grew to absolute love. i went to school in the fall with a whole new outlook on life, and when i got home for the summer 2009 i self-trained for a half marathon. it was exhilarating. later that year, i joined team in training because i figured i'd get to run a great event and i was honoring a friend, a survivor of lymphoma, and everyone he had met. i raised over 3 thousand dollars, ran hard, and it all paid off at the inaugural rock n roll mardi gras marathon. it was the best moment of my life, the WHOLE thing. i was told to celebrate every mile by an alumni, and i did. i smiled for at least fifteen of the twenty-six miles, ran the whole thing straight through, and have never done anything so wonderful! i ran it for my sister, who is in good health and i want to stay that way, and for every cancer patient that wants to run but can't.
