Skip Happy Hour and Take a Walk Instead

Fit Tip: Swap Happy Hour For a Walk

Grabbing a drink after work is often the default option for catching up with friends. But sometimes, all I really want to do is dish, not drink. Since I'm always struggling to juggle workouts and social outings, lately I've started turning after-work happy hours into walking hours.

Take a page from stroller-pushing moms — especially with this extra hour of daylight — and make a walking date with a friend. Pick a scenic part of town, a waterfront or park trail, or a hilly route if you want a challenge. Lace up your sneakers and spend the next hour walking and talking. It's a great way to vent at the end of a workday, and you skip the empty calories, too.

We have a really nice little walking trail by the hospital and when it's nice out, a couple of us go for a nice little walk after work to chat and destress. It's definitely very relaxing after a tough day.

Clearly you happy hour isn't a part of your work day, as it is mine. Most of my happy hours are spent wooing clients over pricey brown liquors. I'm pretty sure if I suggested a walk, they'd run for the hills, taking their business and dollars with them.

I've never been to an happy hour for drinking...we have to drive around everywhere anyway, and happy hour tends to be right around rush hour. But if I do go for a social outing that involves alcohol, we usually walk around afterwards or beforehand. Have a happy hour AND walking hour! :)

Good idea! Honestly, I'd much rather walk than drink (most of the time anyway :P )
