Speak Up: Dieting Before the Holidays

We all want to look good when we see our families for the holidays, so some of us shift diets and exercise routines into high gear. Some may think it's a waste of time, with all the delicious beverages, scrumptious comfort foods, and decadent desserts — it's like fighting a losing battle. Others, just hope to maintain their current weight until Jan. 1. So where do you stand? Do you eat right and exercise right before the holidays, or do you give into temptation and start your healthy lifestyle after New Year's?

I don't diet but I try not to overdo it during the holidays. Winter is hard for me because I get cabin fever and tend to overeat when alone, but when I'm around other people I'm okay.

on quiet days i am trying to be quite strict with the food i eat but it's only because i know there will be days during the season where i will definitely indulge! because everything is so busy and stressful i'm loving my workouts even more! it feels so good to just spend an hour on me amidst all the socialising and shopping craziness!

I've gotten better over time but I always indulge. It's a treat and I don't feel bad about it. I do try to incorporate more exercise than I used to over the holidays. It helps if one's family is into it as well (mine and in-laws aren't) but that's okay because maybe they will be one day. In the meantime, I think twice about that third serving of dessert. I chuckled when I read the post about this time of year being holiDAYS not holiWEEKS. Spot on. What about holiMONTHS or holiYEARS?Cheers everyone!!!

I might eat a bit more of some things but really holiday food for me isn't really something I care to indulge in and it's always the same year after year. I don't care to stuff my face any day, plus why would I want to when I've been stuck at the same weight for months when I still have 15 or more pounds I could lose that I haven't been losing at all? I don't even get enjoyment out of it and it's not a main or even secondary reason why I look forward to the holidays.

Since I'm a college student and tend to let my usual fitness habits slack a little during the end of the fall semester, I always seem to pick up my workout routine before the holidays once I'm out of school. I don't really diet at all (how can I resist Christmas food?!), but I do try to stay conscious to not go overboard with anything..especially cookies!

I've been trying to keep up the healthy lifestyle, but I'm not gonna lie, I've probably kicked it up a notch or two in preparation for the holidays. For one thing, I know I'll give in a bunch during the holidays, so it's preemptive, and for another I have a hot sequined black dress that I'd like to still look good in. It's all about vanity.

i honestly don't vary my routine. i work out every day anyway - and i think that it's part of the reason that i don't stress about the holidays as much. i do HATE new years at the gym though since that's when everyone decides that they should be working out and it's just too busy!

I indulge a bit more... but keep up all my normal healthy habits. I just try to maintain.

I've been on a healthier diet since the before the holidays...but I pig out a bit [my stomach hurts A LOT if I overdo it!] on the actual holiDAYS. I wanted to get started on a comprehensive plan before the holiday season so I could take advantage of the great introductory deals...but it looks like I'm going to be with everyone else on Jan. 1, running my butt off on the elliptical! :DI don't believe in trying to overdo it for the holidays...if you're not doing what you're supposed to do any other time of year, what makes this different??

I don't diet around the holidays but I don't give in to temptation either - dunno, just not really into all the rich food and drink and stuff.

I live far away from my friends and family so I do kick it up a notch before I go home to see them- followed by my grandmother shoving food down my throat when I arrive :)

I do not diet around holidays - it is very hard to do when you have all these gatherings. I try to maintain a good exercise schedule - though it is hard as my gym always close for a couple of days around holidays. This year will be very bad for me - I join a tour group and vacation with my family. Some of the hotels that we stay do not have a gym. I am hoping that I will not gain any weight after this holiday.

I maintain my exercise routine, but try as I might, I can't avoid a spike in cheese and chocolate consumption this time of the year, which makes me feel a little puffy. I generally do a week-long fast/detox in January to bring me back to the status quo.

I think New Year's is sort of cliche, I mean living a healthy lifestyle should be at all times, it's ok to indulge a little during the holidays but they are call holiDAYS not holiWEEKS for a reason :)

I eat whatever I want over the holidays. Who cares? It's the holidays. You're supposed to indulge! Granted, I don't gain weight anyway, so I can't really talk...

I don't do anything special for the holidays. I'm always conscious of my diet and exercise so I just focus on maintaining my healthy habits. I'm more likely to splurge around the holidays, but I try to make it on things that are exclusive to this time of year.

I don't diet around the holidays, really. I just continue to eat normally and keep up with my workouts. I don't usually gain or lose any weight around the holidays...I'm just trying to maintain where I am now.

I always keep up my normal exercise routine and healthy eating habits during the holidays, I've never had a problem with gaining weight over the holidays- so maybe it works . . ? I also don't over eat or over indulge at holiday meals/parties. I think all the party- and extra dinner- related weight gain during the holidays is just a bad excuse when people slack off from their routines during this time of year . . .
