Speak Up: What's Your Greatest Temptation and How Do You Avoid It?

Speak Up: What's Your Greatest Temptation and How Do You Avoid It?

Yes, Thin Mints are my weakness, and actually anything made or coated with chocolate, I just can't resist. I don't think there's anything wrong with giving into your temptations and enjoying a few tasty bites. However, if I ate too much chocolate all the time I'd feel pretty crappy (and end up gaining a few extra pounds), so that totally helps to curb my cravings. Here is the thing: I'm human and if chocolate is in front of me, it can be tough to pass up. So I try to avoid temptations by only buying chocolate in bite-size pieces (instead of huge bars). Since I love to bake with chocolate, I also try to make cookies and treats for occasions or when I'm having people over. That way I can enjoy a cookie (or three), and share the rest.

So speak up and tell me, what do you crave the most and how do you stay strong in the face of temptation?

Expresso and baked goods. Keeping it away from me and vanity help.

Blue corn tortilla chips! Not that bad for you... except I can eat the entire (GIANT) bag by myself if I'm not careful. I made salsa from scratch last night and I had to force myself not to eat all of it! Luckily I have roommates and a boyfriend who are always willing to eat anything I make. Along the same lines- NACHOS. I could live off of nachos. So my trick is to only use low fat cheese, fresh salsa, and nonfat plain yogurt instead of sour cream. That way it still feels like a guilty pleasure! BAKED GOODS! I will eat an entire batch of anything in a days time. My trick now is to only make vegan baked goods and to use whole wheat flour. That way there's very little fat, and I'm at least getting some sort of nutritional, instead of just fat and sugar. In general I avoid food that isn't "real" so I don't have that many problems with crappy food... it's just portion control that's a problem for me.

I love most sweets and almost all chocolate, so this is what I do. Every month or so I will mix together a regular-sized batch of cookie dough (choc chip is my fav), bake about 6 of them, and then ball up the rest on a cookie sheet and stick it in the freezer. After a night in there I've got 24 or so frozen, ready-to-bake cookies that I can pop in the oven anytime I want! This is great because it takes about 15 minutes to bake them, so if I only bake 2 then I will only eat 2, since waiting for them to bake takes a while.

Potato chips and fries are my big weakness. Every once and awhile I'll eat fries if I'm out but if I'm craving them I'll just julienne potatoes and bake them with garlic powder and onion powder (and a few sprinkles of sea salt). Chips I just have to avoid all together because it's true--I can never eat just one! I have no self control around them. It's awful.

pretty much all sweets. I try to bake some really delicious cookies every couple of weeks, that way I can make them (a little) healthier and I'll really enjoy them. With other things like ice cream, I just try not to buy it.

Coconut cake... I'd go crazy if that was in my house. I used to never be able to resist white chedder Cheezits, but I'm starting to be able to turn them down, though I still like em a lot!

kgtg... where do I find this sheese? Does whole foods carry it? Sounds good!

laellavita I used to think FYH was the best, but I've recently gotten my hands on some Sheese and it is phenomenal. I make grilled cheeses with the Cheddar and Gouda. I have also heard the Cheezly mozzarella is miles ahead of FYH but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. Cheese was definitely my weakness! I still miss baked brie. My weakness now is chips. I love salt!

PIZZA. the temptation is so strong every single day. today i even got my keys and purse ready, about to leave to drive through pizza hut. What I did to curb the craving was I sat down and chilled for couple minutes and thought it through. then I had a healthy choice dinner. but mannnn every day is a struggle for me not having pizza!

(this also eliminates trips to ice cream shops where the standard small serving is a full cup and is usually loaded with a lot more calories/fat than your store bought variety) I'm looking at you Cold Stone!! ;)

ice cream for me too. My strategy may seem backwards but I ALWAYS have ice cream in my freezer. The fact that it's always there makes me never feel like I HAVE TO HAVE IT NOW! I know that if I ever want some, I can and I do. We use really small 1/2 cup bowls and I never have a second serving. NEVER! I never really want one after the first serving because I'm usually satisfied. I would say on average I have ice cream about 4 nights a week. It's 200 calories for 1/2 cup, so that's my little snack. I've found that when I tell myself I can't have something and can't have it in my house I just create this really weird obsession with that item of food. Not good.

Ice cream & hot fudge! I avoid it by not having it in my house but unfortunately I work in an ice cream parlor/restaurant so it's inevitable that I'm around it. So I made a rule for myself that I can't have any ice cream at work. Since I don't have any at home, it ends up being very seldom that I eat ice cream :)

Potato chips, specifically kettle cooked, just something about the crunchiness I just love

Definitely ice cream! I avoid it by keeping it out of my freezer, but if I REALLY want it, I'll go and get a small dish at Culver's or something so I have it and get it out of my system without having the temptation there to eat the whole carton. Chocolate is another of my big cravings, but I usually get around that one by baking stuff with chocolate in it for my friends or family. For whatever reason, baking seems to quench my cravings for whatever it is I'm cooking. Strange, but true.

Anything sweet. I love sweets too much. My mom keeps yelling at me because she thinks I'm going to become diabetic. :(

laellavita- try "follow your heart" Vegan gourmet cheese. It's really flavorful and even melts like real cheese. I've been vegan for 9 years and the only thing I really missed was macaroni and cheese. Well I made some last week with this brand of cheese (the cheddar and Monterrey jack... it was reaaaaalllly good!
