Split Up Exercise Throughout Your Day

Fit Tip: Split Up Your Exercise If You Can't Fit It In

It may be tough to break away from your busy schedule to fit in a 30- or 60-minute workout. That doesn't mean you should skip out on exercise entirely though. Anything is better than nothing, so you may need to split up your workout throughout the day.

Do 15 minutes of a fitness DVD before work, walk up and down the stairs in your building for 15 minutes during your lunch break, and take a brisk walk with your dog for 15 minutes after work. That adds up to 45 minutes of exercise! So when you can't get away for one chunk of time to hit the gym or take a Pilates class, work exercise into your life wherever you can fit it in.

That's good to know that it works that way! I did this on Tuesday actually: ran in the morning, then had some unexpected time in the evening, so did some strength training. It was nice actually.

I work full time and with the commute and other activities I have a hard time fitting in big blocks of time for exercise. My solution for this is to work out for about 15 minutes in the morning and take a 20 minute walk at lunch every day and in addition aim for 4 visits to the gym for at least 30 minutes every week. It keeps me healthy, although I have been hitting a plateau on weight loss lately so I will need to mix it up!

Good idea to split up exercising. I should do it more often but I feel better when I do it in one go.

Mamaslita -- from what I understand it's as effective when it comes to cardio + fat burning. If you are training for something, though, it's not a good idea.

I agree with spectra; if it is a really busy day I will split my work out into two 30 minute workouts but I prefer an hour straight through.I feel like I really get a better workout that way.

I do this sometimes if I'm really busy, but I don't think it gives me the same effect. I feel like I get a better workout when I have the time to get my heart rate up for a good 30-45 minutes in a row at least. I guess some is better than none, but I do prefer to get it all over in one shot.

is that as effective/beneficial as doing a solid 45 minutes?
