Splitting Entrees to Save Calories When Dining Out

Holiday Fit Tip: Split the Bad Stuff

Cooking at home helps you save calories (and money), but chances are you're doing a little celebrating this month at a place where you don't have to do the dishes. But while the no-prep, no-cleanup aspect of dining out is a perk, the downside of eating at a restaurant is that you don't have as much control over what you're eating. Many times, restaurants leave out important information about how much salt, oil, or fat is actually used in the preparation of your dinner on the menu.

Asking your waiter lots of questions about how meals are cooked can help you make the right decision, but sometimes you've still got to have the most decadent item on the menu. If you're watching calories, then make sure you use this tip: split the bad — the dish sauteed in two cups of oil, the side of fries, the overly creamy pasta — with your companions, and fill up by ordering an accompanying salad or a half-portion of a healthier option. You'll be satisfied without depriving yourself, and having your friends help you clean the plate of your delicious indulgence will keep you from reaching for more.
