Straight From Amy's Kitchen: Stuffed Pasta Shells

Straight From Amy's Kitchen: Stuffed Pasta Shells

Skipping meals is a bad idea in general, so in those rushed times you often have to reach for a frozen entrée. This is why I like to stock up on healthy frozen meals by Amy's Kitchen. I loved the Vegetable Lasagna, so I decided to give her Stuffed Pasta Shells a try. They're made with whole grains, real vegetables, and no artificial ingredients, so I feel good about eating them.

The shells were even tastier than the lasagna. The pasta was tender - not too firm and not at all mushy. The tomato sauce was very flavorful and abundant (don't you hate when they skimp on the sauce?). The best part was the cheese filling inside. It was so creamy and perfectly blended with broccoli and spinach to give it a wonderful texture and flavor and nutrients.

Since it tasted so rich, I was afraid to take a look at the nutritional info. Want to see what I found? Then

Calories 310 310
Total Fat 13g 12g
Saturated Fat 7g 4.5g
Cholesterol 30mg 20mg
Sodium 740mg 680mg
Carbs 30g 35g
Fiber 5g 5g
Sugar 7g 5g
Protein 19g 16g
Vitamin A 40% 50%
Calcium 40% 25%

Well that isn't so bad. Only 310 calories and those 3 stuffed shells were really filling. While 740 mg of sodium sounds pretty high, when you consider the RDI of sodium is 2,300 mg a day, the amount of sodium seems reasonable.

Here's another tempting photo.

Here's a close-up of the creamy cheesiness.

Now, doesn't that look tasty?

Yum! Just had one of these for dinner last night. I don't eat a lot of frozen food, but every once in a while it's nice to have something so easy to make, and you can't go wrong with Amy's. Good stuff!

i didn't love these, but i didnt' hate them... i wasn't a big fan of the white sauce under the red sauce. there was this white (cheese?) sauce that, for me, overwhelmed the cheese stuffed into the pasta! (boy, i'm glad i'm not hungry right now while writing this...)

I really enjoy many of the frozen foods from Amy's, but this was never one of my favorites...I thought it was soggy and not that tasty.

I would guess that the suspense about the nutritional information is just narrative to make for more interesting writing. The calorie counts are for 1 serving size; per the website, each bowl is a single serving. It's all in good fun.Pretty much all of Amy's products, save the snacks and pizzas, are pre-portioned for one person.

umm, fit...why wouldn't you check the label before eating them. especially just to make sure there wasn't more than one serving in a bowl.

hmm, I'll try these. I see no difference from a Lean Cuisine that has 270-280 calories. I'll just add a fruit, maybe oranges since they tend to make you full afterwards. thanks for the post fit.

When I was vegan, I pretty much lived off of Amy's bean and rice burritos and cheese free pizza....I heart Amy's.

Now, if only they didn't cost the equivalent of my first born child! Amy's stuff is a splurge-only item for me, I'm afraid. Smaller business/local fare suffers higher prices as a result of economies of scale, their ingredients are higher quality and thus more expensive, and they tend to be more time sensitive as a result of not containing gross preservatives. Which is awesome, and awful for me.

I've been really cutting the frozen meals out of my diet for the past six months (hot pockets were my addiction), but this really looks nice (in case of emergencies). I might get a couple to try out.
