Super Glue Is a Super Healer: Fact or Fiction

When the venerable New York Times investigates an urban myth like the healing claims sometimes associated super glue, I can't help but pay attention. I grew up hearing how super glue was a great adhesive for wounds — better than stitches. I have even heard that super marathoners keep a tube of super glue with them to patch up their battered and blistered feet while running 100-mile races.

So what do you think? Is it fact or fiction? Take the quiz to see!

I used to cox a men's crew in high school, and most of the guys would use super glue if they opened a blister. It actually worked pretty well, because it would harden and it would keep the blister from hurting while they rowed. They also sometimes used duct tape, if the blisters weren't bleeding.

I had a tumor on my neck removed, and instead of using stitches, they glued it! You can hardly see the scar and I didn't have to go in and get the stitches removed! The only thing you have to worry about is getting too near heat. I went to a bonfire when the glue was still on my neck, and it started melting... which hurt like you would not believe, cause it was melting down my neck. So be careful of flames!

This seems like one of those "emergency" techniques to me.. like, if you cut your hand open working on something and aren't near a first aid kit. Kind of like the whole peeing on your leg to stop a jellyfish sting thing. My Dad builds boats and he would come home all the time with a cut he super glued.. but it just doesn't seem that sanitary to me.

I woke up from surgery to find that all of my surgical wounds had been closed with SUPER GLUE also known as Dermabond. Dermabond is made by the same people who make Super glue so said my surgeon they just charge more for it. Only thing was it burned my skin and pulled the tiny hairs on my skin. But it closed all five little laparoscopic wound efficiently.

Brandy-that sounds awful!! I thought bleach burned!! But...I use tea tree oil like that!!! I thought I picked up something riding the subway (perhaps just power of suggestion) so I poured some into a nice hot bath...and everything was better. Now I use the stuff in my facewash...shampoo...on cuts, etc!

I've used this a few time - it works - but I only do it when it's a last resort.

I don't know if this one is true or not, but my grandma has an even crazier one. She swears by using bleach, yes bleach, for just about everything. She said it cured her shingles when nothing else worked. Also, if she gets a bad burn, she immediately puts bleach on it, and it keeps it from blistering up and kills off any bacteria that may cause infection. In fact, she said her sister scolded her arm rather badly, and they immediately applied the bleach, and then headed to the ER. The doctor saw no sign of burns when he looked her over! Now, I've never tried this, but her doc said that if it works...

Super glue has poison in it that seeps into your bloodstream. It is only a good idea to use it if it is an extreme emergency and you have no other better options! ---- From an MD

It does work. My boyfriend uses it when he cuts himself (they use crazy sharp scalpels when cutting jewelry out of castings). I heard a rumor that Stevie Ray Vaugh would play guitar so hard and long theat his calluses would come off and he would just super glue them back on. Gross! haha Also though my mom works for the post office and EVERYONE uses super glue. She's like immune to paper cuts now, but the gnarly cardboard cuts are what kills so she super glows and goes on. Through rain, sleet, paper cuts, the mail gets delivered haha

I use super glue all the time on minor cuts, like paper cuts. They do make an actual type of sealer for this that comes with an applicator that's easier to use than the bottle, though!

I have fumbled around with this stuff before, and man, when your two fingers get stuck together, they STAY stuck! Not forever of course, but it's pretty strong.

This is a must-have for ballet dancers. I use it on my deteriorating pointe shoes and on my bloody feet. It's a life saver.
