Thyroid Disease Facts and Tidbits

Does Thy Know About Her Thyroid?

Recently a few of the girls over here at Sugar HQ and I were talking about our thyroids and how we've all had to have them checked out at some point or another. Luckily none of us were found to have anything serious but there are a few things we should all be aware of so we know when to take potential risks to a doctor — after all Oprah's wake up call came from her thyroid. Take this little quiz to see how much you know.

Wow there are so many knowledgeable people out there. I don't run into many people that know much about it. They just avoid asking about my 4 in neck scar. I had half mine removed 12 years ago because they couldn't tell if the mass growing on my thyroid was benign or not. Then the scar never healed right because of the meds I was on at the time. Now I love my scar and know my thyroid facts. It's just a matter of time before my other half sputters out and I have to start taking meds. Anyone know anything about people who live with thyroid problems but can regulate their levels through diet rather than meds? I'd like to learn more about that.

my grandma had thyroid cancer from her hoshimoto's. i think she had hyperthyroidism....but she's almost 70 and has been on meds and closely monitored practically her whole life, and she STILL got cancer and had to have the whole thing taken out. it is really unfortunate because she used to sing and they scraped a vocal chord while removing it, and now she sounds like she is whispering. moral of the story: get it checked. : )

I've got a big nodule on my thyroid that's causing part of it not to work. Fortunately, a biopsy revealed it was benign, so now I can just gross people out when I extend my neck too far. :)

My hypothyroidism was diagnosed in April after I gained nearly 15 lbs in 3 months. Goes without saying, I aced this quiz. (And now that I'm on meds, the pounds are slowly coming off...)

My mom had her thyroid removed about 10 years ago, so I'm pretty aware of all this, as well.

I've got Hashimoto's, and now it looks like my thyroid is going kerflewy again so time for another blood draw! I'd better know this stuff. It's also a 'butterfly' shaped gland.
