Top Ten Healthiest Airports in America

Healthiest Airports For Your Holiday Travels

Many of us are still traveling for the holidays. Whether it is on our way home or back out for a fun New Year's trip, we're spending lots of time in airports. The Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine has rated some of the nation's top airports in terms of health. Each airport's score was determined by dividing the number of restaurants offering at least one healthful option by the total number of restaurants — a restaurant was rated as healthful if it served at least one low-fat, high-fiber, cholesterol-free breakfast, lunch, or dinner entrée.

To see if an airport you'll be visiting makes the list, just

.

Here are the top ten healthiest airports and how they measure up:
Airport Score Healthy Restaurants/ Total Restaurants
1. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport 94% 89/95
2. (tie) Chicago O’Hare International Airport 93% 81/87
2. (tie) Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport 93% 56/60
3. (tie) Los Angeles International Airport 89% 50/56
4. Denver International Airport 84% 41/49
5. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport 82% 46/56
6. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport 81% 47/58
7. San Francisco International Airport 77% 46/60
8. (tie) Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport 84% 49/58
8. John F. Kennedy International Airport 76% 62/82
9. Las Vegas McCarran International Airport 75% 33/44
10. Orlando International Airport 73% 29/40

If you really want to be healthy in the airport, you should also check out getting a flu shot at the airport and what (if any) airport gyms are available.

It really does make a different if you can find healthy food at the airport, especially since you are there for so long. (Just don't forget to bring a "healthy" wad of cash - these places are EXPENSIVE!)

All healthy places in JFK must have been on a different floor, in a different terminal, whatever... a few days ago. So I decided to give in to my chocolate cravings.

Reading between the lines a bit (and knowing the PRMC criteria, which was edited a touch for this blurb), cholesterol-free is vegan or at least low-fat vegetarian item offered on the menu of a sit-down, non-kiosk restaurant. Which I appreciate, since I've been veg since I'm a kid but you can always get something, even on the fly. It's great that alternatives are offered but we should be able to ask, too. That said, the Denver-Metro area as a whole, Boulder especially is very foodie and very conscious about choices and local options.

I flew out to Denver a few weeks ago to visit my sister in law and we went through Minneapolis. I really like the Minneapolis airport. There's a lot of healthy restaurants and the concourse is set up really nice for walking around during your layover. (If you don't use the moving sidewalks, that is).

Aw, no Ontario International Airport here in southern California!!! BOOOO. I'm like three minutes away. It's a gorgeous airport, small and very organized.
