Traffic Light Labeling: A Good Idea?

The FDI (Food Standards Industry) has introduced traffic light labeling on foods in the UK.

If we want to eat a healthy diet, one of the key things we should be doing is trying to cut down on fat (especially saturated fat), salt and added sugars.

The FDI system allows you to see at a glance if the food you’re looking at has high (red), medium (yellow) or low (green) amounts of each of these nutrients in 100g of the food.

What do you think about it?

When I lived in the UK it was great! It just provides a clear way to let you know the percentages (great for comparing foods, if that is a factor in your decision). If it's not a concern, then I felt you could easily ignore the colors, and no one would judge what you purchased.

I feel I can use all the help I can get. I used to smoke and I think that warning label on the packs of smokes worked me unconsciously.

The thing is that I am sure most people know when they buy dorritos and oreos that they aren't healthy. So if they don't already feel judgement what is a little red traffic light going to do? TINA!

What about only putting the green stuff on...kind of like the smart choices made easy check mark, but bigger and on the front. I'm all in.

I like the idea personally, but put that i didn't as some people may be embarrassed they are buying red...it will cause others to look on with judgement.."I can't believe they are buying something with so much red" etc... I'm all in.
