Use Greek Yogurt to Make Whipped Cream Healthier

Skip the Whip, Top Desserts With Vanilla Yogurt Instead

I am eating as many berries as I can until Fall comes and takes them away from me. I love them in my yogurt and cereal, on top of waffles, and especially in desserts. And as much as I wished it wasn't so, berries pair amazingly with fresh whipped cream. Always on the hunt for healthy food swaps, I've been trying to find ways to lighten up my use of heavy whipping cream, and once again Greek yogurt is the answer!

I fold in an equal amount of nonfat Greek yogurt to fresh whipped cream and let that sit overnight. If you like things a little bit sweeter, use nonfat vanilla Greek yogurt instead. My friend also has success whipping nonfat Greek yogurt, lowfat milk, and some sugar together in a mixer until it's light and fluffy. While calorie counts aren't remarkably different, the nutritional content is. This lighter version of whipped cream has much less fat, and contains more calcium, protein, iron, and healthy bacteria from the yogurt. And if whipping and folding isn't your thing, skip it all together! It's amazing how satisfying pie, fruit crumbles, or shortcake tastes topped with nonfat vanilla Greek yogurt.

I love Greek Yogurt! I use it for everything! It is great with cocoa powder and agave mixed in, almost like a chocolate mousse (but much healthier ;)). Check out how I incorporated it into my breaky: http://hookedonhealth.wordpress.com/2010/08/04/breakfast-is-the-most-important-meal-of-the-day/

In a whirlwind shopping trip to Trader Joe's, I accidentally bought whole milk Greek yogurt instead of my usual nonfat. Not to let this go to waste, I ate is with fresh fruit for dessert instead of with a meal. It was so decadent, and fully satisfying as a dessert. I felt a little guilty about the high fat content, but it is true that, especially as a vegetarian, one needs to consume some fat. This is a stellar way to get it. :)

I've pretty much stopped eating whipped cream, only because I really OD on it. It's hard for me to stop at a couple of tablespoons; I always eat a huge glob of it. I used to eat huge amounts of fat free Cool Whip but gave it up because of the trans fat. If you like whipped cream, mixing it with yogurt definitely seems like a good idea.
